Such judgmental people! I'm glad Owen has decided to call Ryder...now, will he leave and meet him? Margot's safe world she's created is now facing a crisis. Will truth win out for all of them?

Ryder may well be "manipulating" Owen into being truthful, but again, I remind, they are both young. While Ryder seems to have experienced a lot more in his life than Owen, he still is not so thoughtful as to try to see things from Owen's point of view. Still, I hope good comes from what might well come to pass.

No, he doesn't - but they will find out in time anyway. They are expecting him to major in business so that he can work in the family business after. At some point, he will have to face them and stand on his own two feet. Does it have to be now? Not necessarily, but he has to start somewhere with them. Where - I have suggestions, but no idea what he would feel more at ease at this time in his life.

Will Owen's testosterone be strong enough to cancel on the "date" to the fair? Will he be able to let his parents know he may be changing majors in college and following another path? Such are my thoughts and wonderings...

Neil is progressing very nicely and coming out of his shell! His presence, while initially surprising, was quite the boost for Alex.

Beautifully written and so accurate in the development of each of the characters. Matt and Levi are developing a true father-son relationship through patience, honesty, and love.

Chapter 7 The aftermath of the attacks: Sunday January 6th, 1974
pvtguy commented on Gary L's story chapter in Chapter 7 The aftermath of the attacks: Sunday January 6th, 1974
Such cruelty occurs still in areas of the world. It is sickening, disgusting, and utterly despicable. Thank you, @Gary L for reminding us of this type of behavior. While it evokes much emotional pain and anger on my part, it serves to show how far some people have come and how far many in the world still have to go to become truly human. -
I hope there is a time for Beth to speak with Owen privately. She is most observant and apparently very empathetic and supportive. Owen hopefully will consider teaching as a career...

He’s been raised to be passive and only known this method of surviving. The M/S relationship in a chosen relationship is one thing; this is not the same. He has to develop the strength to stand up for himself. I see the seeds of this happening through his reflection.

Owen in his present mode of operation will not confront Margot. Something needs to happen to allow his testicles to drop and give him a shot of courage! Until we hear from Ryder and learn his story, I still am severely disappointed in his behavior. All I see is another Master-Slave relationship with Owen being the slave!

Owen has been raised to be passive by his parents. Thus, he was vulnerable to Margot's more aggressive personality. Both Margot and Owen have played to the expectations of their parents and their community. They both are hoping that leaving Zanesville will give them the freedom to be their authentic selves. Do they honestly think they can continue a lie for their parents, that how they live in college will not get back to their families? Perhaps Ryder is scared, but I do hope his reflection will lead him to the conclusion that he's been withholding personal information from Owen too. He's no better than a liar by omission too!

Ryder has laid out Owen's life precisely - nothing that Owen doesn't already know and doesn't know how to change at 18 years of age. However, while he learned of Owen's life via Facebook, Ryder has not shared anything about himself via the conversations either. I don't think he is justified at all for his reaction but rather his reaction belies his own masks. Then again, he's also very young at 20-ish. The drama is part and parcel of their growth into maturity. I also believe Ryder will call first once he cools down. This can be the catalyst for both of them to be honest whether they end up together or not.

Might it be possible that Neil shows up unexpectedly? That would be quite the surprise.

If courage is being afraid and still doing what you fear, then Owen is about to develop a stronger and more courageous approach to life hopefully. Now to learn about Ryder!

Ryder is very perceptive! And Owen is probably more transparent than he thinks. Ryder's guesses are confirmed through the phone call. He is definitely more Alpha than Owen, but also caring. Of course they are meeting!

The comfort each feels around the other is growing and is delightful to see.

Chapter 178, The Photoshoot
pvtguy commented on Dodger's story chapter in Chapter 178, The Photoshoot
I, for one, am not ready for this to end. There's so much for Robbie to accomplish before the ending comes! I want to see Don and his friends brought up very short! I want to see Robbie independent of Nathan. Thanks, @Dodger for another wonderful chapter. -
Chapter 5 Heroes or traitors? Friday, January 4th, 1974
pvtguy commented on Gary L's story chapter in Chapter 5 Heroes or traitors? Friday, January 4th, 1974
The anxiety level is increasing exponentially. Ximo and Gerardo really do need to have an ironclad plan if they are not to both be caught! I'm eager to see what Ximo's father has to say. -
This is the question which has been at the root of various Christian denominations splitting into the factions of "traditionalists" vs "progressives". I'm so glad I attend a very accepting and welcoming church. Levi is growing by leaps and bounds considering the short time between his mother's death and the present. The tension he feels is the impetus for further growth. @Mark Ponyboy Peters, you are a master wordsmith who creates so accurate emotional insights.

Wonderful foundation being laid for Owen to become more confident and perhaps more assertive. Ryder and Owen both have a lot to share with each other before any commitments are made. Ryder will have to understand the situation with Margot if anything further than texts is going to occur. Great start to a captivating story!

Owen feels smothered in Zanesville but hopes Ohio State will allow him to finally breathe freely. Ryder appears to be someone who will help him develop some confidence in himself as it appears he has been through or is going through this process too! Loving this story!

Chapter 4 Trouble in Paradise: 2nd- 4th January 1974
pvtguy commented on Gary L's story chapter in Chapter 4 Trouble in Paradise: 2nd- 4th January 1974
A tension filled chapter for sure! Luck prevailed this time, but will it continue? -
Owen is just at the beginning of his coming out process. Margot may be the initiator of this process, but he was quick to jump on Cole's wonderful warm and open conversation as a hope of a friend. Cole's response, while understandable, is a bit rude: he understands what Owen is going through, but is unwilling to be a friend who could listen and help him progress. I'm of two minds about him. Owen is going to have to eventually let his family know he has no interest in the family business. He ma@y be afraid that they will abandon him both emotionally (though that seems to have already happened) and financially, which could well affect his plans for university. Great storytelling once again, @mastershakeme!

@CincyKris: there are areas of the world where there are very fundamental Catholic churches who actually reject any forward thinking that comes from Rome. It is possible this was the type of church that Julie was involved in, though Levi's visit to the parish priest didn't seem so negative. Then again, maybe it was her family - especially her father - who was the domineering influence. The grace said by Levi was truly beautiful! And his talk with Luke and Matt after dinner has set the foundation for truly open communication.

An interesting morning for Owen to be sure! I would be interested to know Nora's family situation that turned her into this bitch-in-training. A lovely collection of kids that Owen has in his group. I have a feeling he will have a positive impact on them as well as they on him.
