There are one hell of a lot of interesting things that happened and new information, but I still haven't pieced it all together yet. I think that the wolf mate is wounded, but has a chance to live. I also think that Kavan's power to heal Gideon is not related to killing the lykan, Armin. Kavan's interest in the "pit" doesn't explain why Kavan followed Gideon there. It also does not explain why Kavan was able to find Gideon when Kavan first lost track of him and his team.
Gideon becomes more complex as we find out more about him. His actions and behaviors now seem a defense to protect him from his past as a slave fighter in the pit.
