  1. Thank you very much. I’m glad you found these encouraging and powerful. If they’re fitting ways to remember Carlos, then they have hit the mark.
  2. Thank you very much. I hope he is agreeing in spirit someplace.
  3. These poems remind me very much of Carlos. I cannot imagine Carlos being conquered. Thank you for your encouraging words:
  4. I could not agree more. We need far more of Carlos, and much less cultural direction from above. He wasn’t the biggest fan of my poetic work, but I think he might have liked these.
  5. Defiant was CJ’s Jeep, but it was so often the kind of tone Carlos set. They called him to mind directly.
  6. Thank you.
  7. i. You can talk about Jesus and sin and we must watch you pray at the game, grooming impressionable youngsters for your faith; yet you say we must remain silent and hide our pride away from your eyes. ii. Our story is not for you to write, or edit according to your whim; it’s not wet clay to shape or shatter as you please, but long engraved on true hearts that shine with the same pure, bright flame as your own. iii.
  8. Four skyscraper poems in tribute to a great friend.
  9. You’re very welcome! I enjoyed returning to these characters after a long spell away from them. Tomas has indeed seen his life changed more than he ever hoped for or imagined. After the holidays, I shall have to think on what’s next for them.
  10. You’re most kind, and thank you for reading this occasional series all the way through. It was fun to return to these characters.
  11. There’s so much to read on GA, it’s hard to know where to begin. Thank you so much for your kindness in reading A to Z all the way through.
  12. How I missed this, I don’t know, but let me extend to you a big hug of welcome.
  13. Welcome to GA. That story of how you first met is lovely. You’ll find many other writers, readers and friends here.
  14. You’re very welcome! I’m glad some joy from this story could warm the dreary day.
  15. The family is religious in my background notes; the parents emigrated, bringing rich traditions with them. As a younger man, Tomas felt the need to connect to these via Catholicism as a way of making himself feel worthy. His seminary experience only served to amplify his feelings of unworthiness. Tomas just discovered that his mom and siblings are more fiercely loyal to family, and specifically in this instance to himself. It’s a very joyous discovery. Thanks very much for your comments and for reading!
  16. It’s a series of snapshot stories; each builds a bit on the previous ones. They kind of grew, and then I got involved in other matters. It was fun to return to these characters. Thanks for giving this a try.
  17. Thank you very much for reading this addition before your daylight fades. I'm glad you thought it fit the season as I did. I'm sure the other chapters will keep until bedtime!
  18. Thank you for reading. These guys still warm my heart.
  19. “Who invited you?” He frowned and squinted at the slight, black-haired woman before him, as if doing so could help him hear better in the overcrowded kitchen. Though the room felt overly warm, with what seemed like two dozen people crammed into the space, he shivered. A definite draft – from the back door through which he had recently entered – made itself acquainted with the nape of his neck. All the other guests at the open house were talking at once, slowly grazing past platters heaped w
  20. They look delicious!
  21. Time away from the townsfolk was possibly therapeutic for Jubal. The what-might-have-been kind of question about the foal is bound to resurface in other contexts. Jubal won’t know what could be true for him if he doesn’t talk plainly to Lucas, even at the risk of the dreams he might have for them both.

I have been meditating on this chapter for a day or so. It’s such a beautiful thing to watch Liam and Ed form their attachment. I cannot help but ache for Liam, though, knowing as we do how transitory connections at the treatment facility can be. Such connections can’t be unknown in places like that: how will the staff handle it when the boys are found out?
  23. Or maybe he sang it softly to Andy when he slept.

    Chapter 1

This is a sweet miraculous tale. It was hard not to devour it all too quickly.
  25. That final image was one etched in my mind; one that Monica could convey to us all.
