Thank you so much for your very kind thoughts concerning this story. There isn’t much action, yet the conversation between Ed and Robert covers plenty of time and ground. Each man unfolds to the other in a way they hadn’t dared to earlier. @AC Benus indeed gets my fulsome thanks for getting me out of my funk enough to write and for his help in editing/beta reading.

I love the way you put it: Like Robert, there are things in my own life I’d rather leave behind. Many must feel that way, as you suggest. Robert certainly changed in some ways. The death of his and Jamie’s parents must have affected Robert in a such way as to make conversation stilted, superficial and, as Ed put it, distant. That is both sad, and yet common enough. I’m so glad you thought this was a worthwhile story. It felt good to write a story again - thank you for your generous response.

In this final draft, if Robert can find a ray of hope and even a little redemption, then perhaps this story will have succeeded. Thanks again.

Thank you for your kind words, and especially for reading this story. Your last question is perhaps the most intriguing and the most problematic: once anyone (Robert is an example) realizes the wrong one has done, then commences an endless what if ? It’s so hard to gauge what our ripples actions will cause in the seas of life. Even if Robert only knew in part what he had done, he can only sail a new course through those dark and troubled waters. Thanks for sharing your own experience and for reading this story. As you said, the age gap can sometimes render meaningful connections difficult until well into adulthood. Jamie and Robert couldn’t seem to have the conversation that Ed prompted. But maybe there’s a ray of hope for Robert and for Ed, too. Thanks very much for reading and for your thoughts.

@AC Benus put these two men together in a prompt he kindly shared with me when I was at a low ebb. So, too, are Robert and Ed in dark places. Writing this story gave me the chance to shine some light into their sadness, and maybe offer them some hope. Thanks so much for your kind comments and for reading their story.

Robert tried to bury his youthful sins, acts which he had no idea would come to haunt him this way. Ed will ever wonder if he didn’t fight enough at the hospital. @AC Benus’s prompt put these two men together, and it was my hope that together, they might be able to find some healing. @Cane23 Thank you for your reflection on Robert and Ed’s encounter. Perhaps it will mark some kind of turn for both of them. Some wounds leave deep and permanent scars, and what happened before and after Jamie’s death must surely do so. But if there are scars, then maybe there will have been some healing, too. At least, that’s my hope for both of these men.
