  1. Lots of clues and data for figuring out the Reznick advantage. Once Kellar and Tobyn discover it, perhaps they can counteract it without anyone else being in danger or hurt. I so enjoyed seeing Tobyn and Kellar taking care of each other, being real foundations for one another. You are weaving quite a world and a tale, and I cannot wait to see the next chapter.

    Late July

Can I tell you how much I liked this chapter in the few minutes I have left to me this morning? I doubt it. But I can tell you that this was a really warming and delightful chapter, from the episode in which Toph tells off his frightful mother, to the wedding scenes, to Clarence's hugs. And morning lovemaking in between...all beautifully understated, yet perfectly clear. You write wonderfully, and give us such good things to replace Toph's initial bitterness.

You aren't comparing me to Dante, now are you? But you are right - only Ted has a name. As for being a morality play, perhaps it's better thought of as a conundrum. At least so far. Many, many thanks for your perceptive remarks!

You are not alone in your unease. You hit upon one of the things that occurred to me as I wrote this story: what does comeuppance look like, and can we stand it? Or, as you ask, is revenge justified? Ted and our predator are dislikable people; can one love an antihero? No, not easy reading, but the questions remain important to me. Thanks for looking at them with me through this story.

You have every reason to feel uneasy about this story. It is unsettling, and it was not easy to write. I appreciate your kindness, no, generosity in calling this story well-written. The essential question is whether a predator can be granted the same humanity to which we all aspire. That is yet to be seen. Thank you for hanging in there and for staying with the story,

Well, I am glad there was a brief foil to the darkness to follow in this chapter. Perhaps I should have used a different city? Cincinnati? Anyway, you are quite right that Ted is indeed chilling, creepy and quite a predator in his own right. Redhead's part in this is not completely clear, but may become so later...no spoiling, sorry...and no, it isn't stupid to feel a bit sorry for our predator, not at this point. Thanks so much for your response to this chapter.
  7. How hard it must have been to part ways, to accept the sorrow and hurt. I cannot know your choices or your hurt, but I can offer you hugs and the solace that your well crafted words ring out your cries to all who can hear.
  8. How did I miss this one? You write a searing poem on two small words loaded with meaning. It is written so well...well enough that I want to hug you and tell you just to tell me what hurts long before the final lie is told. And yet, we wonder whether everyone else really wants to hear the real answer, the real response, instead of those two little words. And so the small voices in our heads play us for fools. Thank you for sharing this, even though it brought you pain.
  9. Your words cut to the heart of the pain. 'Moving on' sounds easy on the tongue and is a gut wrenching dissonance for the heart. Your words come out of the rain...formed a most powerful image in my mind. And the last two lines simply gave us the final cadence in a minor key. Beautiful, and so very painful. In sorrow that you hurt, in admiration for your skill and courage...Parker
  10. These evocative verses bring dozens of images to mind, one right after the other. They are so very interesting. I liked the first stanza for the relationship of light and time and unknown histories. The second stanza made me want to reflect on theology; but perhaps the lines best act as a foil to the third stanza, while yet elegantly telling us about the observer. Beautifully done.
  11. Thank you so much for taking the time to read A to Z. It is always good to hear from someone who found the joy in it in the end. I am glad it connected with you, and that you found the light that grew steadily throughout the story. Abuse is often at least as much psychological as physical; Andy bears both sorts of scars. I appreciate your kind words, and the time you took to respond to the Andy's tale.

Thanks for reading, and for your response. I am glad you thought this chapter was written effectively. I know it was not easy to read, so I appreciate your having done so all the more.

I fear that this is part of the difficulty of wanting someone to get his comeuppance. It is so very painful to watch, even in those we dislike. It is in our very dislike that we dehumanize the other. Our predator, for all his many flaws and evils, is a human like us. And yes, it is chilling to see. Thanks for your willingness to make it through chapter three, and for your response.

    The Promise

Good for CJ for thinking clearly about drinking while his head was clear enough to do so. Your descriptions of his travels and encounters makes me want to start making travel plans. But it just surely help to have someone as knowledgeable and friendly as Owen to be a tour guide. I wonder how CJ's heart is faring? Or Owen's for that matter? Great chapter!

I know exactly what you mean. I have had this conundrum, but liked things I thought were good solid pieces of writing, even though I found them painful to read. In this story, You have been through three very hard chapters, and I thank you for that. The hardest part is to realize that while this account is fictional, these things do happen to real people. The man who was a predator is now being bound and devoured. Karma? Maybe so, but it is one thing to wish it on someone, another to have it happen...thanks so much for being willing to read this, and for your response.
  16. Okay, so this is an exciting start...what comes next cannot be good, can it?

    Chapter 8

For a whole lot of reasons, I loved this chapter. Coming out to Billy, reconnecting to Adrian, realizing the hurt of losing Kenny isn't going to kill him, realizing that Marty may be right...all excellent, all really good. The only problem is, I want more!
  18. Scary enough to last me until Halloween! Please, let the faeries find someone else....

There is nothing good in Ted's departing words. This is real horror, if you like. Thanks for reading and hanging in there.

Tim, you spoke my own feelings as I wrote this chapter. I did not want to feel badly for the predator, but at some point, I did. But I'm sorry this made you squirm. Thanks so much for reading this and for your response.
  21. Your first - Will He Never Leave Me - is so very chilling; just the way you composed it, it almost dances with maniacal glee. But you won't be left alone by any of us, either. That little voice cannot dance away love, in my opinion. Questions Without Answers affected me, too. You ask questions that occur to me regularly. I have to think affirmatively, but the need to ask, the need to consider and think things through is human. I agree with Gary that your poetry is a gift, not just to lucky us, but to anyone who reads it. And I think that your questions are especially important, because we all have to work out our own answers, if answers exist. It's not mathematical, after all.

He'd been ripped apart by a cock the size of Atlanta. Spit lube had no charm, not when he was on the receiving end. But then, Ted had not intended to be charming, not now. He'd howled loud enough to wake up his roommate. Probably woke up most of the rest of the residence floor, too. But it was a party dorm. In fact, it was the party dorm. He'd helped make it that way, worked hard to build that reputation up. People partied. Sometimes all week, and nobody complained. There never was a noise is

    Chapter 1

This is an utterly engaging story. You make it seem so real, so easily imaginable. I want to know more about Jae and Dave; more about how they live in this grey, hollow, lonely and hollow world. Surely even this chapter shows they are making it more human. Wonderful start, and now I want much more...
  24. I blush deeply at your very kind and generous words. 'Stranger' was indeed inspired by that awkward gent in the mirror; I am glad the inversion at the end worked for you. 'In Hiding' is more deeply felt. Thanks for reading these and for your response to them.
  25. These were written in the middle of a dark span of days; the light returned, and these words were left. The poet appears to have someone who will not hunt him down, someone who can help hold the stranger at bay. And in that, there is hope. Many thanks for your very kind and generous words. I blush, even as I smile...
