@dughlas I would've liked to see you as a Scots laird. I should've made it clearer I was referring to the current use of 'marches' or 'marcher'. Used in a geographic or heritage context on the Welsh border, it's not heard in Northumberland.

In which case, more thanks than usual for persisting and commenting. Hmm... experimentation, and pushing yourself, are both good ways of improving writing skills. Because my writing has been dominated by the two chaptered stories over the past year or so, then that part of my writing style has become the norm. I certainly don't see it as my only style, as looking at some of my earlier work will show you.

Thanks, dugh. Weirdness and ghosts - who could resist? Interesting you describe the area as 'Marches'. We use that term for the Anglo-Welsh border, but I've never heard it up North.

If our characters all acted in a logical fashion, there wouldn't be much to write about. And there is the niggle of "What if I do nothing?".

Music filled the flat one late afternoon when the message light on the phone blinked. No bleep or buzz because they'd been turned off. Ferdinando Sor requires practise and concentration. Whoever it was would have to wait until the piece concluded to my satisfaction. Finally, I propped the guitar up against the digital piano and rescued the phone from on top of a heap of sheet music. The screen showed a message. Come at once! Help! It's urgent! There it was: the short, mystifying text

Although Eric is the main focus of the story, the two younger men are important players as well. Both interact with him, learn from him, and give Eric the sight of two gay men living full, open lives. I enjoy focussing on them as well as your 'favourite curmudgeon'.

What a lovely, tender way of ending the story. Another step along the road of putting the nightmares behind them. It felt very real - Jim included. A great read.

It was great fun, thanks Def. And being very late to the party, the formatting quirks have been sorted. I like stories told through texts, messages, and other media, as well as the normal storytelling. It all added to the immediacy and the pace of the piece.

Having made up his mind to go, he followed through. I wonder how much the thought he has someone at his back has helped? Rural areas with intermittent phone signal and slow internet, the urban poor with limited literacy skills, and the elderly come to mind.

Hmm... the last time I visited my local branch, the assistant persisted in pushing the bank's app. 'Why didn't I use it?' 'I'd find it much more convenient.' When she offered (almost insisted) to download and install the app for me as if I were some technological refusenik, I nearly lost my temper.

Yes, apart from one reluctant shopping trip to the city courtesy of Andy, we have seen him only in his own town. And even then, he's largely restricted himself to those few areas he's used to. Leominster's not quite terra incognita, but getting pretty close.

I was thinking of a history teacher who actually treated us like humans, not exam fodder. I saw him in the street some 25 or so years later on one of my visits back. He looked almost exactly the same, only older. It can happen.

That's the way the (ex) high street banks would like us to go, despite the fact their apps regularly have problems. They are removing branches at a frightening rate, wilfully ignoring the fact that there are people who can't / won't / lack the equipment to bank online.

I haven't been on a plane in living memory. I'd be at least as nervous as Eric, probably more so because of all the rules and regulations before you're even allowed on one.
