  1. Thanks for the quote re Franco. 4 km due south on the (old) main road from us is a stunning restored monastery (San Miguel de los Reyes) it became a terrible prison when Franco, finally, captured Valencia. Food had to be given by families or face starvation. Paco’s aunt was married to a member of the legitimate armed forces imprisoned there. Her sister, Paco’s mother came here to help her. After he was killed in the firing squad, the aunt married his brother and Paco’s mother stayed and married locally. Every year we see their tombs and ponder on the awfulness of Franco and his evil regime.
  2. The car indicated right and swung off the main road and immediately the minor road turned downhill. “This looks like it’s going to be a fun fourteen kilometres of curves and hairpin bends. I just hope it doesn’t snow!” Joan glanced across at Jack as he spoke. The latter nodded, not wanting to take his eyes off the road for a second. It was nearly twenty minutes later when they saw the little village ahead of them. Beget was literally at the end of the road. There were a number of stone houses, a
  3. I woke up late, stretched out and sighed. Five days to go until Christmas, then the ‘holidays’, if they could be called that. I’d not exactly been a good student this first term and there would be exams immediately after New Year. And I had been warned. Seriously, warned. My dear tutor had had his spies out and was threatening to tell my parents that I was on the edge of being expelled. Yes, me, with the highest marks in my last year at school, almost first on the list to get into the law depar
  4. Two friends meet up with a stranger in the Pyrenees who gradually tells them his story of life and love in the last years of Franco's regime when homosexuality was a crime. We meet Ximo and the love of his life. Can that love survive what life in a dictatorship throws at them?
  5. Sadly, I’ve started to use the “ignore” option for those who insult me, other readers or are offensive to writers. Shame there isn’t an icon for “what a wan**r”
  6. Wonderful start. I adore the style. Will continue reading tomorrow but this is great. 👍

    Chapter 1

Great comments, thank you, my friend.
  8. So agree.
  9. I too want to add my thanks to Val and Aditus. I thought I would be way out of my comfort zone - arcane punk fantasy - but rather to my surprise I enjoyed my flight into Aztec rituals, perhaps a bit too much 😱 also thanks to @Cia for sorting out my technical mess (eg adding the prologue of another story to this one etc.) 🙇
  10. Just hope the WiFi is working in our pyrennean hideout, or might have to abandon holidays many thanks Mark
  11. The young man looked at himself in the gilded mirror with a self-satisfied smile. He knew he was a stunning example of perfect masculinity; after all, he had heard words to that effect ever since he could understand them. And then there were the looks. These had changed as he grew from a cute baby into a pretty little boy, and now as a head-turning eighteen-year-old. He sighed and withdrew his gaze from the mirror. Turning towards the bed he glanced at the outfit he was to wear for the cer

And fiction is really fiction. Look at Kris’s title, for instance….. Also Carlos’s real name in the story could be signor Verdi…… oh, but actually he is an invention not the real life heir to Aida.

    Chapter 22

I remember an elderly cleric asking me at the college where we worked what I had done over the weekend. On hearing that I had been to a formation on surviving abuse, he commented, thus: oh yes, back in the day the Church had a contact in the News of the World Sunday paper who would ring up on a Saturday pm if a priest was about to be exposed. “He’d be put on the night boat train to Ireland.” I couldn’t speak. pd he was the Spiritual Director of the attached seminary…. (Mid nineties)
  15. Yep, some things just turn up and priorities change. I hope all goes well for your Grandma. X
  16. Rain, rain and more rain here but next Sunday to pre Pyrenees for a week. Just us, the evil duo and lots of food. Tiny village, medieval church and bridge. Supposedly good WiFi 🤞 Tomorrow round trip to Madrid to take our friend for her cancer treatment, 700 km, 450 miles. She has to go twice a week. Friends now taking turns…

Um, somehow I don’t think that a confident, Italian aristocrat from a family which once ruled Milan for centuries will go down well with Travis’s insecurities…. Our evil author gets more evil every week 😱
  23. Off to listen to Handel’s Messiah in a couple of hours with a massed choir of 300+. Not my favourite thing to go to but our friend with terminal pancreatic cancer is singing in the choir. Yesterday she was in Madrid for advanced treatment (8 hours in car) and tomorrow again. She is an inspiration to everyone on how to live life to the fullest.
