The analogy with chess challengers etc., brings the two themes of the story together really well. A good chp. -
It was a pleasure to get a first read! The story is so clever as well as utterly beautiful. Last week we were in the mountains 100 miles NW of here. I have never seen such wonderful colours. The poplar trees had bright yellow leaves contrasting with the “boring” evergreens. Tossing armfuls of leaves in the air we got some amazing photos of our friends, especially one who won’t see another autumn but was the happiest of us all.

I think virtually everyone in the story has come along way which is why it is so pleasurable to read. I think this is one of @Robert Hugill’s best so far. So enjoyable -

I fell in love with this as soon as I read it. A haunting, beautifully-written tale which takes us into the otherworldliness of tree spirits. Don’t be put off, it’s a story that works on multiple levels. A joy to read.

Four people arrive at the cabin for their first non-digital meet up. It’s ten years since they were online together. But where is the fifth person, the one who organized things? A beautifully-written short story with a powerful message. One of the best stories I’ve read this year. Superb!

We went to the mountains for 4 days. Amazingly, Lilibeth was totally obsessed with our friend who has terminal pancreatic cancer. She cried and cried every night to get into her bedroom and during the day was glued to her side. These dogs are incredible. -
