    A big shift was always going to happen after retirement. It was inevitable. In earlier chapters, Jay talked about retirement. If he wasn't planning on moving forward with Loren, he wouldn't have been so adamant on Loren's opinion regarding retiring or extending. This was always coming. But you are right, they do love each other. And Loren is broken, just scarred...and still scared. He had to grow up early and fast and now he needs to do it again.
