Yes, they were, but their language was mostly affected by the conquest by the Normans and the Anglo-Saxons, although they used some Latin as well.
-
That's most likely due to the fact that French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian all evolved from Latin, since those areas were all part of the Roman Empire. English is basically a Germanic language, but it has adapted many words from other languages over time.

Right now I'm stymied in disbelief that it was once a rule of golf. That must have led to some interesting golf rounds.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the feedback. -
Interesting repartee in a story is always a plus.

Just think of how that would have worked for Clement Clarke Moore in his poem, A Visit From St. Nicholas. The lambent moon on the breast of the new fallen snow Gave a luster of midday to objects below.

I agree4, Al. I've always felt the pleasure of giving a gift was in knowing how much it was appreciated, not in bragging about having given it. Thanks again for the feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed this story. -

It could have gone either way. Ricky was always the prankster, but then the brothers started getting even with him and Elliot took it to the next level, even though he's Ricky's nephew. -
I find PT#96 quite intriguing. I might have to give it a try when I find some free time.

Chapter 1: The Spirit of Christmas
Bill W commented on Bill W's story chapter in Chapter 1: The Spirit of Christmas
Thank you for your feedback and kind words. I believe it's important to do as much as you can for those who are down on their luck at any time of year, but it's especially true at Christmas. Maybe that's why every year at Christmas I watch two or three movie versions of the movie A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, because Scrooge finally comes to learn that he needs to do, and should have been doing, for his fellow man. I wish you and yours a blessed Christmas and New Year as well. -
I wonder, since this word comes from the Latin, if the Romans used this term to point out the good and positive qualities of their wives, or if it was a derogatory term used to point out the lesser qualities, such as a nagging wife.

I even went back and edited it, so it would be more obvious. It now reads as follows: His signature was difficult to read, but I believe he wrote S. Claws. C-L-A-W-S.” -
Yes, Bernie Madoff certainly put Mr. Barnum to shame.

Thanks for the feedback, Danilo, and I'm glad you enjoyed the story. First of all, I thought it would be funnier if the garage man used that description and said something about a Secret Santa, and then claimed the guy signed the work order S. Claws, intentionally misspelling Santa's surname. I thought everyone would still get the point even if I added a bit of humor to the story. Thanks again, and have a marvelous Christmas time.- 34 comments

Thank you for the feedback, Dr., and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I knew some of the readers might think this story was about the same as the first story, The Spirit of the Season, but this time Yale and Mason were trying to do much of their good deeds anonymously, although Wil and Penny suspected they'd been responsible. It was just to remind others that you can do good deeds without having to take credit for them. The rewards are intrinsic, in that you know you did something good, rather than extrinsic and looking for praise from others over what you did.- 34 comments

And the word rhymes with ilk and milk, not with those that pronounce the latter melk. P.T. Barnum had a doctorate in ways to bilk others, since he believed a "sucker is born every minute."

Thank you for the feedback, Scrubber, and it's true. Sometimes when you give a gift, it gives back to you, but not in the physical sense. If only more people realized that, then they might more willing to do more for others.
