You can tell this word comes from the German just looking at it, but its not something I expect to hear in daily conversation or see in casual print.

May the coming year be kinder to you than the one we're about to exit.

I guess the humor in this lies in whether you pronounce Uranus as Americans do or as the British do. Your anus as opposed to ur-an-us.

I just don't answer the phone unless I recognize the number of the caller.

When I hear the word spiel, I think of loud and obnoxious politicians.

Antidisestablishmentarianism - Word of the Day - Dec 29, 2022
Bill W commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
Quote Antidisestablishmentarianism is the longest non-technical, non-contrived word in English at 28 letters. And a favorite of spelling bee finals everywhere. -
2023 Anthology Theme - And the Winner Is....
Bill W commented on Valkyrie's blog entry in Gay Authors Archive
My first choice. I'm so excited and can't wait to see when its due, although I'm already working on my story. Who knows, like astone I may attempt more than one. -
I would have guess this word meant in a mild manner, not flattering manner, such as a person trying to find something to say without hurting the other person's feelings. Oh, well. I guess I was thinking of the other half of the Latin root.

Paladin, Paladin where do you roam? Paladin, Paladin far, far from home. Part of the theme song from Have Gun Will Travel TV program (1957-1965) starring Richard Boone.

auxiliary - Word of the Day - Mon Dec 26, 2022
Bill W commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
When I see this word, the first thing that pops into my mind is the term "ladies auxiliary", because the women usually have a support group for men's fraternal organizations, and in the past occupations that were mainly male, such as the fire or police auxiliary. I'm not sure if they still have those, since women now serve in both the fire and police departments. -
Peace is something the world should strive for, but unfortunately there are always some people that think they can gain more through war and hostility or make themselves feel more human by attacking others. May this season bring peace and tranquility to all, especially my friends here at Gay Authors.

No, I didn't wake up, start my computer, and hop on GA. I haven't gone to bed yet. My body clock doesn't coincide with standard time.

Not to be confused with roll tide, which is a common phrase you hear down here in the south, especially in Alabama.

And suddenly homosexual men everywhere were suffering from constipation so their doctor would prescribe a set for them.

If you read or watch old westerns, they often talk about the saloon girls sashaying around to attract business. I'll let you decide if it was business for the bar, such as getting the men to stay longer and drink more, or business of a more personal nature.

Father Christmas, Krampus, Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, and Kris Kringle
Bill W commented on Cole Matthews's blog entry in Writing World
I'd never heard of Krampus until a few years ago while watching a program on the Travel Channel. I would imagine that more than a few children were scarred for life after watching a parade with Krampus in it, since he's kind of a scary looking creature who supposedly beats the bad children with birch sticks. Yeow. -
Oops, you got me.

Ok, I'll wait with everyone else. 😅

I voted, but I just popped on to see which choice was leading. Unfortunately, it doesn't show the results to date as it used to do. Oh well.
