The King has given the Vanguard its own mission. It will move along the coastline and extort money and supplies from the rich cities who do not want to be plundered and then onto Jerusalem. They will stay ahead of the religious fanatics and Raymond who will conduct the siege operations he wants. Darien , Val and Wyland as the little saint are leading the well supplied and very capable vanguard as the tip of the spear for the larger force on a good mission. They could not ask for better duty and they are leaving the mud and bitter politics behind.
