One would think if he didn't have the screws and plates, he could transition into someone else, and the transition back would heal his bones, since in essence, they'd need to be recreated. Like Pa said, transitioning into something large enough to still contain the plate might be possible, but getting everything back in place when transitioning back could be tricky.

Needless to say, Keith Fuchs was exonerated of the crime and Simon Durgess taken to trial for the same crime. Belton Garber felt it wouldn't look good if I handled that prosecution. I had to agree. Simon got the seven years in prison that Keith otherwise would have.
