  1. Was that by choice or like most of us, Microsoft force itself on you? Seriously, name a product and their license owner is...Microsoft, it's hard to get away from Microsoft. I'm not a Linux or open source fanboy, but it does stink that so many software licenses come from them and you need their support.
  2. YB Can someone give me some numbers (I could ask Blue, but he's busy in the other place right now ) on the effectiveness of Bing versus Google? I know Microsoft was touting bing as their answer to google, but it hasn't really made me want to switch. I actually am a bigger Microsoft hater now than I was before Bing, because the search engine sucks for me anyway. I've given up being a rich hipsta Apple guy, so my only choice is to be one of the many droids
  3. Well, let's see: We first had Apple as the evil computer company, then they fell apart in the 90's to just come back to life and enslave us with the Ipod, Iphone, and Ipad along with all the nice software from Itunes Microsoft tried to be the biggest bad ass in the world and web, buying everyone out. Then, they got sued and started falling back down to ground level. They are somewhat evil, charging hefty fees for their X-Box online content, but they are no longer super villain material. Now we've to two newcomers: Google and Facebook Who is more evil? Who will actually succeed to take over the world(wide web) ? Google is now so into their software and hardware, it is not even funny. Facebook is heading down that direction and I wouldn't be surprised if Zuckerberg is planning on making his own tablet soon with how much money Facebook is going to get on the initial public offering.
  4. Agreed I was surprised by that too, Madonna was a nice half-time and made me think of Gaga for some reason.
  5. It was a good game and Eli did very well. Pats were not playing at their peak and it shows. Brady made some bad calls and belichick made a bad call in using that timeout to challenge that play, but it was understandable. I am disappointed, but the game was thrilling, it was nail biting and if Gronk had gotten the ball at the last second before it fell to the ground, we'd have won. I think I am done drinking for the night, defeat is a sobering feeling. ________________ And yes, Eli is very attractive in his nice guy next door type of way
  6. Hope your back gets better and stretching is supposed to help prevent back pain from what I heard.
  7. He was the best editor I have known to date. Sadly, I have had this horrible time with editors taking on my stories then dropping off the face of the internet. I think I am cursed writer, any editor that touches my story will disappear in a few chapters or one long short story.
  8. Wow, I didn't know one small description would start us down into a flame war, seriously guys. I guess this all goes back to identity and understanding, I like living in as many worlds as I can, despite my predilections to certain things. I can drink, but I have the "Asian" disease of alcohol allergy. I can watch sports and like it, but my vision makes me a horrible player. I can watch and play musical instruments, but I just don't have the attention to finer details that most musicians or even hobbyist have. I mean, I do like to live my life as I try out new things, even if I can't really do it. I feel like the label is not something to frown on, if you live your life true to yourself and who you are. A lot of gay guys have self-hatred, but they're still gay inside and I sympathize with them (DK will probably blast me a new one for saying this), because underneath my own acceptance, I also know how it feels to hold onto the fear of a word and concept. I know if circumstances and things were different I can become one of them. A label is only a description, don't let it define your life. I might say that now, and be a hypocrite about it later, but I think we can live for who we are, not who we think we are.
  9. I remember all that When I was 5, my dad got one of those old Wang computers, I don't know where he got it, probably either the dissolution of the company or something, it was 1992, so probably companies were getting rid of it. The thing was a useless paper weight and I personally wanted to play carmen san diego on the old Mac like my friends. Do you remember the old sites like Lycos with their puppy mascot. I miss the 90's. My last IQ score was around 140, about 143 at age 15, but I don't really care about IQ that much. (My teachers say I lack focus or interest. Though none of the ADHD tests ever showed any signs of issue, so they thought I just don't apply myself, which is pretty true as I didn't care much about school work or projects.)
  10. We already won that, we don't want to be too cocky, people will hate us Bostonians I vote the Pats to win, but I saw Eli's montages: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/1201/eli.manning.rare.photos/content.1.html plus he's not half bad shirtless: Am I a traitor for thinking he's cute? (Blue, you can bite me a new one for saying that, but can you honestly say that he's not at all attractive?)
  11. A few, but I am kind of surprised Ayn Rand got on the list before so many others, plus Buroughs and Capote (both gay authors ) were on the list, so I wonder who compiled it. I also would like to add one more that probably speaks more to my generation than the older guys and probably would seem strange to the younger guys, but it is still cool today: The Perks of being a Wallflower It's a good book and the movie hopefully will do it justice, so it can become a symbol not only of my generation struggles to find meaning and sort through our tangled lives, but also be part of the current generation.
  12. Don't know Chase, maybe your omni-curious As for sports, I grew up in Boston, if you grew up here as we won World series, super bowls (cross your fingers for another), World championships, and the old stanely cup in less than 10 years, you can't get out of it. I also like to play games and have friends try the madden challenge, which is awesome to watch. By the way, I like taller guys, but I am 5'10, so you have to be a giant, but that's personal preference.
  13. For me, what began my realization that I was geek was modding. Something about turning Homeworld into epic re-enactments of science fiction battles like Star Trek or B5 were cool to me and still are (I absolutely love Sins of the Solar Empire franchise for the same reasons ). I wish I can find gay modders, who enjoy tweaking their games, playing around with in-game mechanics or even modelling things differently, which I freely admit I suck at doing (I don't have any artistic skill whatsover when it comes to graphic design). In high school, I also had a stage where I was both a geek and VP of the Bible club (Yes, I was in the closet at that point and fighting my own sexuality). There's another weird dichotomy, I can quote biblical scriptures in KJV and the Roman Catholic international version, but I also liked blowing up large ships shaped like the galaxy class enterprise. As I grew, I left the self loathing behind and began hanging out with gay guys, but my geek friends were probably much closer to me. Things change as you grow up, but somethings don't change. I am not as religious as I used to be or play Homeworld as much anymore. Yet, somethings in your life don't change, I still like moddig the newest games and I know I am gay without reservations or fear anymore. I guess for me, being a geek and gay are things that never changed in my life, I might do stuff differently to express it, but they are still part of who I am.
  14. I just realized something interesting in my head. Geeks and gays are both usually outcasts, but how often do gay guys, who aren't geeks, hang out with geeks? How does it work? Seriosuly, I do want to check this out, because I was a geek in high school and still am today, I usually hang out with gamers, programming people, and others more than I do with gay guys with interests in art, music, or clothes. I still enjoy those things too, but I just like my geeky side more. It's like the two worlds don't mesh unless you got a person from both. My ex-boyfriends were basically illiterate in terms of anything to do with computers or programming, and barely even touched games. Anyone else feel like they are trapped between two subcultures?
  15. Who do you guys think will play Crassus in this one? I think Jeremy Irons would be a shoe in if the Borgia's don't get a third season (love that show too, if only they could show more Machiavelli ).
  16. Happy Bday! Hope all your days are filled with fun, joy, and pleasure
  17. Yes, I know, it's like a testosterone trip to Disney World The show is amazing and I am just catching up on it now as I have heard a few tell me that I would enjoy it. It has a surrealistic artistic touch that appeals to my artistic side, plus the blood, violence, and fights make me happy for some reason. I know the ending of the story, I've seen the old movie too, but this re-imagining feels fresh. It's like Showtimes' Rome meets 300. I love the story, it's fun and highly recommended if you like high concept story lines or just great action. Yes, there's a lot of extravagance, intrigue, and sex: hetero, lesbian, and a few gay references, but well that's Rome at its hedonistic peak after becoming master of the Mediterranean. It's also a lot more dirty than other shows about Rome in terms of background and characters, which is true to a point as Rome was not the bright spot of civilization that Renaissance thinkers try to envision, nor what many nations like to hold as their pillar. http://www.starz.com/originals/spartacus/about
  18. I wanted to buy a membership, but not sure if it would suck like Star Trek Online, so wanted to wait. (I was a Trekkie first, ) I might try it out in a month or so when I have more time.
  19. I just came back from across the Atlantic and I have a lot of new takes on ideas and thoughts. European culture is something American too often ignore, sadly, but it is very integrated to everything that the US in terms of our customs and ideas are about. American so often neglect or reject anything to do with Europeans, but in reality, the US holds a lot of the traditions with Europeans in different areas. There's also a European issue about their own infrastructure problems that I have witnessed first hand. Blue and I have argued about fiscal policy, but travelling from the wealthiest hamlets like Baden to the metropolitan, Strasbourg, to the industrial Mannheim, I think the arguments of the future will be much more detailed on the concept of operations in modern civilization within fiscal policy. I also see a problem with the German and French models of policies, but that will probably be something I will address toward European members in the Soapbox at one point. I also had the pleasure to visit Brussels, the De Facto Capital of the EU, which is magnificent by the way, but it has its own urban issues due to centuries of building. Its mixture of Greco-Roman, Northern Renaissance influenced, and modernist architecture leaves it confused in a nice way like finding out your best guy friend might be interested in trying stuff with other boys . There's also a very nice dichotomy with its French/Flemish/German influences that is very cute. Berlin was another European Capital I looked at with astonishment and despair as I also toured the former eastern sections of the city, including an interesting side commentary on Check point charlie and walked a bit of the dividing line between East and West Berlin. I also saw the infamous "Zoo" station, where child prostitutes were heavily trafficked. (I don't count Luxembourg as many others tell me and I agree with them that it's really an expensive outlet ) Europe game me many impressions and many thoughts to dwell on. PS: on the long rides on the HoF, I had re-read DK's Do-Over series for the fifth time. After seeing the display of European Solidarity at Brussels and Berlin, I really wish DK could have expanded the storyline more on those concepts. If you had seen the light show at the "Grand Place" in Brussels or toured the memorial sites of Berlin as they are now, I think the story would have shown that unity and solidarity as a theme more than anything else to change the world for the better. Perhaps solidarity is idealistic and will never last more than a generation, but it is that small piece of heaven that makes all our potential hells worth it.
  20. I know I can't finish this story before I will have to leave on vacation. Maybe, I should not have started playing with my tablet, but I just can't resist a new piece of tech, especially one with such sleek and elegant form. I will write again after I come back, who knows, maybe I will write a travel blog. See you all next year
  21. Actually, I just got it today. I also just downloaded GTA III to test out the graphics It is very cool, but still not even touching the quad core power potential. I hope they can convert Saints Row over to next generation of droid tablets. FYI, if you are strapped for cash and don't want to spoil yourself like me, I advise buying an Acer A700 in 2012 as they all try to fight for the title of Quad core king with Ipad 2 sitting on the side acting all cool, but everyone knows his days as the king of tablets is about to end, unless his brain trust can come out with the Ipad 3. I chose the Asus Transformer Prime, because I like the ability to have both a laptop and a tablet. One for work and one for play, makes perfect sense for me on how tablets can be used well. (I am now a convert to the theory that android tablets will one day take over mankind after the Ipods and Ipads are overthrown by collective groups of android devices, who will fight amongst themselves in a real "droid war" hehe! ).
  22. Well, I did get one thing for myself that is material and really cool, I ordered it more than a month ago and have been waiting for it for 6 months (not sure if a gift to yourself is right for Christmas ): This is not mine, I got the black finish not the grey one. 23. I like the phallic shape Well, I can be ingenuous and say world peace, but I would rather have an island paradise with only men and the fountain of youth
  24. I thought you said you liked the "300", which was originally a graphic novel before it became a movie (or maybe it was PrivateTim). Frank Miller's work is not even close to being PC as it is one of the best examples of new American literature and art. A good story doesn't need to be based on words if the force of the actions and motivations can be worked well into the story's plot. A graphic novel's quality to me depends on this issue. Manga is much more classical in my view, some like fruit baskets are not the same as an American comic books as they explore a lot of human characteristics within the subtext of the storyline. Subtlety to me differentiate the Manga and the American comic book, but I will admit that certain Manga series of recent time like Naruto hold less subtlety and emulate American comic books more (It's not a bad thing as I also am a fan of the series and am a Naru-Sas fan ). Also, there's a caveat to the rule of Manga stories not going into the mental state of characters, Neon Genesis Evangelion is best remembered for the anime, but the manga also has the same concepts of psychological application of characters within plots (not to mention a very interesting archetype for a gay character that has not been repeated as of yet). It's a interesting idea that is perhaps one part madness and one part genius for the Manga creator, Sadamoto. There's a lot of territory that GA writers can work with and create for themselves. Heck, maybe some will start up whole new genres and break new ground in our little corner of storytelling.
  25. Just had a thought while reading some of the stories on GA and wandering around searching for reading material on my long 10 hour plane ride. Why doesn't GA have a section dedicated to graphic writers? I know I can't draw even if you put a gun to my head, but I've noticed in the past some of our guys and ladies were very talented. Graphic writing to me seems like a form of writing that is lightly covered and not something we talk much about. However, works like Watchmen and Knightfalls from the 1980's-90's have proven that the concept of a illustrative novel is sound and should work well if a writer and illustrator can work side by side together or they are the same person. That type of writing has caveats and limitation as emotional aspects cannot be looked at beyond the subtext and actions of characters as standard writing allows an extra level of mental detail in my view. Maybe I am over thinking again, but it seems like we could have fun and I would love to meet a good illustrator, who can turn some of my ideas into 3x3 panels As for Manga, there's a large variation between deep story telling and slapstick art. You can make a case for both, but I tend to also think of it as a written work. Anybody else, ideas, thoughts, and just a little debate that won't turn this into a soapbox topic
