Summer vacation had started out well for Derry and Caleb. There was much to occupy two adventurous boys in the rural landscape in which they lived. They had the woods, and the fields, and the waterways to occupy them.

And they had each other.

But then they made a discovery - a strange place hidden in the forest, a pathway to lands beyond description. And suddenly, the summer was not quite so simple any longer.

The adventure continues. CJ, his family, and friends return for the last two years at School Without Walls High School.

Devon McGee meets Colin Wentworth and begins working with him. Colin is a puzzle. Devon is trusted immediately and given a task to restore Colin's Ancestral home. Then puzzles begin to cause Devon to wonder about his employer. Colin has a past and Devon is and was not prepared for what he finds out.

Brian and Lanny cross Europe on a low-budget trek. In the process their respect and affection grows.

As Billy Roberts begins to heal from a broken hand, he must work to heal his relationship with his father. But trouble looms as his best friend, Dustin Smith, and his boyfriend, Brett Reilly, have secrets which threaten to tear them, and Billy, apart.

Brian has joined Sam and Ben as part of the Montgomery family and begins his college education, meeting many new people and beginning his new life.

The summer that began with Rules of the Road is drawing to a close. Brian and Jeff have become close, despite their inability to have their relationship out in the open. But time and events - and people - have a way of adapting, and the closing days of summer are just the starting days of new things.

If only he could stop thinking about the overly-friendly King of Jocks that seems intent on making friends with the new guy. Toni learned the hard way that making friends with the schools golden boy is a very bad idea. If only he could stop thinking about him...
