Words to Match the Music in my Head - 1. Chapter 1 Three Drinks

This is a song about loss. Sometimes, we can't move past certain events.

Words to Match the Music in my Head: A Collection

Three Drinks

He walks, like a lonely panther in springtime

She walks, like a wounded deer in fall

They look, like they’ve lost the world between them

They’re hurt, because they couldn’t have it all

He feels, like the world won’t open to him

She feels, like all her dreams have died

They know, nothing takes away the sadness

Sometimes, fate will take you for a ride

The blame, does not rest lightly on his shoulders

It’s not, how their life was meant to go

The shame, well it never really leaves her

Fairy-tale beginnings, oh, but little did they know

Sometimes, life can tease you with its blessings

Give you love, and let you know that you’re alive

Set you up, so you never see it coming

Just to steal it all away, in one five-minute drive

He walks, like a lonely panther in springtime

She walks, like a wounded deer in fall

They look, like they’ve lost the world between them

They’re hurt, because they couldn’t have it all

Four years, they’d be married in September

Two months, was all the baby had to go

Three drinks, was all that he'd had during dinner

For them, there’d be a cost they didn’t know

He says, that he never saw it coming

She says, she was just too tired to drive

They know, that the guilt will never leave them

They grieve, for the child that didn’t arrive

He walks, like a lonely panther in springtime

She walks, like a wounded deer in fall

They look, like they lost the world between them

They hurt, because they couldn’t have it all

He wants, her to look at him the old way

She wants, him to take back those three drinks

They know, that there’s two of them to blame here

They don’t, want to know what the other thinks

Who knows, if they ever will escape from

A feeling, that they let each other down

Will time, ever help them to recover

From the loss, of a cry that’ll never sound

He walks, like a lonely panther in springtime

She walks, like a wounded deer in fall

They act, like they lost the world between them

They hurt, because they’ll never have it all

They’ve tried, reaching out to one another

Move past, the loss and all its pain

So far, there’s this emptiness inside them

At times, it feels there's nothing to regain

Four years, they’d be married in September

Two months, was all the baby had to go

Three drinks, was all that he’d had during dinner

For them, there was a cost they should have known

He walks, like a lonely panther in springtime

She walks, like a wounded deer in fall

They act like they lost the world between them

They hurt, because they could have had it all

My first foray into lyrical poetry.

Gary, this is simply heartbreaking.

At first I thought it was about the guy leaving the girl, but then you incorporated the almost-four years, the three drinks, the two months for the baby to be born, and I just found it heartbreaking. It really made me tear up.

I think the poem is terrific, although it's so sad. You should seriously think about submitting it somewhere.

And this is your first poem? I would have never known.

Wow, thank you, Lisa. It is my first attempt, so it's cool that you liked it. It was inspired by a heartbreaking loss friends of mine experienced. they really tried, but they never got past it, and their marriage ended. It didn't happen exactly the way of this song, but it has the same feelings. Thank you, Lisa, so much.

That was beautiful and heartbreaking. :,( You could feel the loss and that insurmountable distance that can happen between a couple after a loss. I've had friends who lost a child and that blame game can tear the relationship apart. Very well done Gary

Thank you, Lit. Does this mean I'm a poet/songwriter now lol. It was fun to try something new and different. Playing with words is fun when there is some meaning for me behind them... I appreciate YOUR words... cheers...

Probably a more effective deterrent against drinking and driving (DUI) than many a campain I've seen. And a harsher punishment than any fine the driver could get. So sad.

Thank you for reviewing,Tim. It was a very sad thing... to watch their excitement turn to despair in the blink of an eye. In the end, the real life people couldn't handle it, and broke apart... I appreciate the words... cheers

A tragic, experience but it captures the pain and anguish of the couple. Seems odd to say, but well done, Gary it was beautifully rendered.

Thanks, Defiance. It was painful process to watch at the time... The reviews this song has gotten, well, they've greatly inspired me to explore this way of telling a story. Your kind words are very much appreciated. Cheers... Gary

That kind of loss would be devastating. I could see that pain making each parent retreat into themselves - leaving the relationship abandoned. Well written tale of a crushing loss.

Thanks, Eagle! Guilt and blame can do a lot of damage. In real life, I think if she could have gotten pregnant again, they may have made it through... but it was not to be. I am so pleased with the response to this song...it was sad to revisit... Cheers...Gary

This telling of a sad course of events was beautifully and sympathetically written. It caused goosebumps all over and brought a tear to my eye. This shows you are a wordsmith with skill and have fittingly captured the atmosphere. This is as relevant today as the day it was written and should be showcased. :worship::worship:

Been so long since I read this. I'd completely forgotten about it. I used to write songs... but I'm not a musician. I do hear music in my head when I write what I consider lyrics, though. :)  This one is sad, based on some truth. Losing a child in any way is something you never get over. Glad you found it worthwhile, buddy. Thank you! You are very kind.
