Changes - 11. Chapter 11

Now and then ...

Chapter 11

It was nearly 4:00pm, and I was packing up when Peter from Grand and Maguire—the advertising company the Partners used—dropped in to see me.

“Hi, Louis. Can I have a word? The Partners wanted me to bring up a few samples, to see what we can come up with for you to wear.”

Damn it. I shouldn’t complain. “Hey, Pete. Yeah sure, come on in.”

We spent the next thirty minutes deciding between polo, sleeveless shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies, and then the logo placement that best suited the Partners.

Peter finally left, and I sent Don a quick text telling him I was on my way. I’d wanted to leave on time so I could hopefully be around while the guy from Axels was with Donny. I also wanted to meet Robert! I consoled myself with the knowledge that I’d be home in about thirty minutes.

When I pulled into the yard, I parked next to the Axels van. The representative was present, and Don, Rena and a man I presumed to be Robert were standing there talking.

I shut the car door and walked over to greet everyone. Don noticed me and rolled toward me in his fancy new wheelchair.

“Hey, Lous! Whatcha think? It’s a loaner until I get my custom-made ones, to get me used to the feel of them.”

“Whoa, baby. That’s something. How’s it feel?” I bent to kiss him. I checked out the extended third wheel and steering.

He reached up to hold me in place for a second and whispered, “It feels nearly as good as you did last night.” Then his lips were on mine briefly. “Love you.”

“I love you too.” I took his hand and straightened up. “I should say hello to your mom and Robert.”

We moved to them as the Axels’ Rep said, “Okay, Mr. McPhee. I’ve got everything we need. Couple of weeks and you should have your new chairs. Any questions or concerns, here is my card. You’ll have to come in for final adjustments and you can test the chairs there.”

Don accepted the card and handed it to me. “Great. Thanks for everything.”

“No problem. Good luck in the marathon. I’ll look for the article.” The young man walked to his van. “Bye now.”

“Thanks again.”

By this time, Rena and Robert had joined us. Don made the introductions, and I shook Robert’s hand.

“Louis, it’s great to meet you!”

I smiled at him. He was a good-looking man; salt and pepper hair, and bright blue eyes. “It’s good to meet you too. Rena has kept you to herself long enough.”

We all laughed, and after a hug from Rena, Donny and I invited everyone in for coffee.

I went inside to start the java, while the others got Don moved onto his regular chair and stored the racing machine. After flicking the power button on the coffee maker, I moved to the sink. The porcelain was cold as I rested my hands on it. I gazed out the window.

Out beyond the window, the breeze made the leaves on the trees flutter, they flipped exposing the shiny top and matte undersides. It looked like a dance, a celebration of the setting sun.

The sigh I uttered wasn’t sad. It was a satisfied one, and suddenly, I just felt happy. I wanted to share it.

At that moment, my smiling husband, his mother and Robert came in. They were all talking and I found I just didn’t want this to change or for them to leave.

“Hey, guys.”

Donny grinned, and the other two looked at me expectantly.

“I’m thinking …” I looked pointedly at Don, who was ready to say something, but who also quickly closed his mouth. “It’s a great evening. It’s getting on to dinnertime. We have no plans, so why don’t we have a barbeque? We can drive into town and pick up a few things. Won’t take too long. What do you think?”

“It’s a little cool for a barbeque, isn’t it, Lous?” Don asked.

“Well, we can cook outside and eat in here.”

“I think it’s a great idea, Louis.” Rena smiled and held Robert’s hand.

Don nodded. “Sure, if you want baby, why not? I’ll go shopping with you, Lous. If you want.”

We decided that Robert and Rena would get things started and Don and I would drive into town to get what we needed.

I pushed Don into the van, and while he settled himself, I turned to Rena and said, “Would you call Miriam and Doug? Ask them to come; tell them they are welcome.”

“Are you sure?” Rena looked surprised.

“Yeah, I am. You guys need to reconnect, and if there’s a baby well … well I think it’s just the right thing to do.”

Rena put her arms around me, and we hugged. “Thank you, Louis.”

Damn, she was making me teary. “Call them, okay. Tell them to come. We’ll be back soon with food.”

She wiped her eyes as she stepped back, groping her right-front pocket for her phone. “Okay. See you soon.”

I climbed in, pulled up the ramp, and closed the back door.

Rena appeared at Don’s window, gave us a little wave and walked back to the house.

Don smiled. “Everything okay?”

“Yes, I asked her to invite Miriam and Doug.”

He gazed at me for a second; I couldn’t read his eyes. “Good idea. Come here.”

I moved closer, and he pulled me in. Our lips touched. I moaned; felt my cock start to harden. I grabbed his shoulders for support. His tongue rudely found mine, and I felt that deep ache in my balls. Finally, he released me, and I sat hard on the driver’s seat. I felt like someone had punched me.

“Geezus, Donny.” I pushed on my hard dick to ease it some. It had already begun to leak.

I had to smile because he looked like the cat-with-the-canary.

“Good, right?” He chuckled. “I am so gonna fuck you later.”

My eyes closed. That ache of want and desire deepened. That smile was still on his face when I opened my eyes. “And I so fucking want you too.”

I turned and pulled on my seat belt, willing the ache away. I started the van and we drove into town.

Shopping with Donny is fun. He’s a giant child, and we giggled and laughed as we walked through the store.

“So, Lous. What are we cooking? Can we have sausage?”

I glanced over at him, looking up from the chicken breast in front of me, wondering if he was serious. He was grinning like a cheeky cat.

“What? I really want sausage; they’re better than hot dogs!”

I bent to kiss him briefly. “Those sausages, or mine?”

“Well, yours is mine later, but for dinner I’d like the hot Italian ones.”

I rubbed his shoulder. “Oh, you like hot Italians, do you?”

His eyes widened as he said, “Louis! I’m a married man. But if you feel like sharing, yes, let’s get one of them.”

I couldn’t help but laugh at that. “Well, I’m going to add some of this chicken and we’ll get some hot and sweet sausage.” I added things to the basket on Don’s knee.

I pushed him along. “We’ll need rolls, and salad.”

“Potato salad? And a cake! Let’s get a cake to celebrate with!”

Bending to nibble his ear I said, “You just want to eat cake.”

Turning his head quickly, he caught my lips with his. “Yeah, okay, mostly!”

We picked up lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, green onions, and a large container of potato salad, rolls and finally a cake.

“Which one do you want, Don?”

“Not chocolate. Do they have something light?”

I looked at the ready-made cakes. “How about this citrus one?”

The icing was a light-yellow frosting, with small candied lemon slices decorating the top, and toasted coconut on the sides.

Carefully lifting it from the cooler, I showed it to Don.

“Perfect.” Don placed the cake on top of the other contents of the basket. “Now let’s get home and eat!”

“Excellent idea, baby.” I pushed him through the aisle up to the front of the store to the checkout.

After paying, we loaded up the van and made the return journey holding hands.

***

Rena had made a nice marinade for the chicken. We turned on the barbeque and pulled out plates, napkins, knives and forks. Donny made the salad.

We’d just sat down at the kitchen table with drinks when a car pulled in. Miriam got out of the passenger side and a man, Doug we presumed, got out of the driver’s side.

I stood, went out the back door, and started walking to the driveway; with Don rolling along beside me. Miriam had the same dirty-blonde hair as her brother; she was dressed in a light parka against the evening chill. Doug moved around the car and took her hand.

We met them halfway.

I shook Doug’s hand while Miriam bent to hug her brother.

Miriam introduced us. “Doug, this is my brother Don, and his husband, Louis.”

“It’s great to meet you both,” Doug said. “Miriam has told me a lot about you all.”

I glanced at Don, who simply smiled.

Doug continued to say, “I mean she’s told me everything, the good and bad. I hope we can just go on from here. I can’t speak for you, but that’s my aim.”

“Doug, I think that’s what we all want.” Don smiled again as he turned himself around. “Now, I think we should have a drink and eat. I’m starving.”

***

After a successful meal, I collected the plates and put them in the kitchen. Fresh coffee dripped into its pot as I cut the cake.

“Can I help, Louis?”

I turned to see Miriam in the kitchen doorway. I smiled at her.

“I’m nearly done, but if you could grab the cream. That would be great.”

She walked to the fridge and tugged on the door to open it. “Oh, Louis I can’t see it.”

I joined her. “I’m sure I bought some.” I found the carton on its side, tucked in beside the milk. “Here it is.”

Turning, I put the cream on the counter behind me.

“I’m sorry, Louis.”

I pushed fridge door to shut it. “No, no. Don’t worry about it. It’s easier for Don to put it on that shelf—”

“No … Louis … not the cream.” She was crying now.

“Miriam, please … please don’t cry.” I pulled her into my embrace and she clung onto me and cried on my shoulder. “Please, don’t do this to yourself.”

“B-but I was awful to you.”

“It’s in the past now. Please … shhhhh … it’s okay.”

“How can you just forgive me?” She backed away a little bit and pulled a tissue from the box.

I leaned back against the counter. “I think the question is how can I not? You’re my husband’s sister, and my sister-in-law. We all make mistakes.”

She held the tissue over her fingertip and carefully wiped her eyes. “Thank you, Louis.”

I smiled. “Let’s get this coffee and cake out there before your sweets-addicted brother comes looking for it!”

Miriam picked up the cake while I carried a tray laden with everything else. “Oh, you know Doug is just as bad as Donny.”

“Is that even possible?”

We were laughing together as we returned to the living room and joined the others. Robert stood to help Miriam with the cake, and I settled the tray on the coffee table.

Once everyone had cake and coffee, I couldn’t help but notice the glances that continued between Doug and Miriam.

Donny had noticed too, because he said, “What is with you two? I think you should just tell us.”

The pair looked at each other again and Miriam seemed ready to start, but Doug patted her hand. “Let me.”

She nodded.

“Well …” Doug reached forward from the sofa and put his mug and plate on the coffee table. “First, thank you for inviting us tonight. I’ve enjoyed meeting you and the dinner was great. Mir and I have spent a lot of time talking over the past few days. I’m grateful to you all that you asked her to tell me about our baby—”

“Yeah, well that pissed me off. Men have a right to—” Don started, but Rena shushed him with a finger over her lips, and a slap on his forearm.

Donny grunted but was silent.

Doug smiled. “Yes, she finally told me and we decided a few things. One, and the most important is, we’re, well Mir is going to have the baby; and two, we’re going to raise him or her together.”

Miriam was smiling broadly now and Rena was staring at her daughter. “Does that mean … that you?”

“Yes, Mom! We’re going to get married.”

Rena grabbed for Miriam’s hand. ”Oh, I’m so happy for you both, three!”

I glanced at Don. He was grinning, and then we were all offering congratulations.

Don asked, “Is there a date for the wedding?”

Doug smiled at Miriam and then replied, “Before the baby comes, we hope. That would be ideal.”

“So …?”

“So, within the next six months, but I’d say four to be on the safe side.”

Rena sat down and spoke to her soon-to-be son-in-law. “Winter weddings. I can help if you like. Just tell me what you’re thinking about and I can make calls for you.”

“Thanks, I think we’ll need the help.” Doug reached for Miriam’s hand.

“I promise just to do what you two want. I refuse to be the mother-in-law from hell.” Rena looked at me expectantly.

I pulled the fork from my mouth. “Oh, I am supposed to jump in now?”

“You were, yes!”

“Oh, right. Well, no, Rena is definitely not the mother-in-law from hell.”

Rena stared at me and laughed.

The gathering went on for another hour.

“Well, it’s been a wonderful night, but Rena and I have plans tomorrow, so we should head off.” Robert got to his feet, Rena took his offered hand and he pulled her up.

She smiled. “It’s been wonderful. Thanks, boys, for doing this.”

After they left, we sat for a bit longer, finishing our coffee with Doug and Miriam. We found out that Doug was a teacher also, and that was how the pair had met. They seemed to care very much for each other.

I sipped the last of my cool coffee. “So, what are your plans? Have you decided where you’re going to live?”

Miriam turned to me happily. “I’m going to sell my condo and then move in with Doug. He has a lovely home on the east side. Lots of room for kids.”

Don looked up. “Kids is it? More than one then?”

“It’s possible.” Doug grinned.

“Well, as the uncles we get first dibs on babysitting!” Don leaned back in his chair, with arms crossed.

Miriam smiled at her brother. “You may have to fight with Mom about that.”

Don’s faced dropped a bit as he realized. “Hmm, well, we can share!”

“Honey, I think we should get a move on.” Doug got to his feet and took Miriam’s hand to help her up. “Thanks very much. This was a wonderful evening.”

“It was!” Miriam bent to hug her brother and me. “Thanks so much for everything. I love you both.”

***

“That was nice.” Donny loaded the last of the dishes into the dishwasher.

“Yeah, it was a good time.” I put the remaining food and cream into the fridge.

“Cake was good.”

“Mmm, yeah, not too bad.” I closed the fridge door and realized that Don had moved closer. “You want anything else?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“What? I’ll get it for you.”

“I want you, upstairs naked.” Don said this very quietly.

I stood still for a moment listening to him. This was a command, not a request. “Yes, okay.”

Don pressed the button for the elevator. As we waited, I recalled the first time Don had spoken to me like that. Rena was away, he still lived with her, and I was spending the night.

***

We were on the sofa in Don’s room, which was in the basement. Don was twenty-two and had been working in a motorcycle shop. He wrote about them and sports, at home, in his spare time.

Tonight though, things were hot on the sofa. We had been kissing and Don had pulled off my t-shirt and was playing with my nipples. I’d never done anything like this and I was panting under his touch.

His lips were hot on my neck as he kissed me, and mumbled, “Come on Lous, let’s go to bed; I want to fuck you.”

I pushed him away. “No, Donny. I mean…”

He sat back and pulled off his shirt. I just stared; he was beautiful. Whoever said the male body is not beautiful was blind.

Then he stood and removed the rest of his clothes. He was solid muscle and his gorgeous, uncut, thick cock stood ready. Don’s beauty and the throbbing member that leaked pre-cum waiting for me, transfixed me.

He moved closer and bent to kiss me, and I knew then I could not deny him what he wanted, because I wanted it also.

Don released my lips, grabbed my hair, and pulled me closer. The scent of him was so male, musky, so sexy, and I couldn’t get enough. I breathed him in, rubbed my cheek along his hardness, letting me lips brush the shaft and the soft skin on his balls.

He looked down on me with lust-filled, golden eyes, held his cock in his other hand and said, “Suck me.”

I opened my mouth and he slipped the head in; I groaned and reached up to hold his ass and let him take my mouth. Donny knew this was my first experience of anything sexual, with anyone, and he let me explore.

I slid my mouth up and down his cock but stopped and took it in my hand. I stroked him, watching the foreskin move slowly over and down the sensitive head. I licked him from base to tip, sucked him in, up and down. All the while he had a hand gently on my head, his own thrown back as I teased and sucked him.

Suddenly he stepped back, took my hands, and pulled me to my feet. He took me in his arms and kissed me, hard, and his hands were at my waistband. After slipping the button open, he released me, knelt in front of me and pushed my jeans and underwear down.

“Step out of them.” It was an order, gentle yet unmistakable.

I did and he pulled off my socks. I stood there naked before him for the first time, and he rocked back and gazed up at me. He ran his strong hands up my thighs to my hips and held me.

“Fuck, Lous, you are perfect. Beautiful.” He got to his feet, picked me up, and carried me to his bed.

The next hours were painful, delightful, hot and sexy. Don made love to me and I came, riding his thick hard cock while he stroked mine.

Don had been sitting up this final time and he’d been deep inside me, his arms wrapped around me, when I leaned against him, tired, sated but so very happy. I could feel his beautiful cock slowly shrink and I tried to move but he held me tight.

“Baby,” he whispered. He kissed my neck. “Just sit still. Wait and let’s just be quiet.”

I relaxed and held him, and said quietly. “I love you, Donny.”

His body stiffened but he didn’t let go. He leaned away a little and smiled at me. Then he pushed back my hair and just looked into my eyes for what felt like an age.

“Lous, say you’ll be mine, like this for always.” He’d whispered those words so softly, I could barely hear them. “Say you’ll love me like this for always.”

I had tears in my eyes because I knew he meant them, those words. I knew he’d never said them to anyone before. Then I answered him with words I’d never say to anyone else. “For always.”

***

“Babe, are you coming?” Don waited by the bedroom door while I, just out of my daydream, was still in the elevator. “I could just jerk-off, but I know you need my dick.”

I smiled at him, then laughed, and chased him into the bedroom.

This is such a nice chapter, tim. I loved each of the scenes, but perhaps the grocery store grabbed my fancy first.  The family brought together, laughing, celebrating, happy  and content: that's so wonderful, too. And then the memories: Don and Louis making love - these are the kinds of things that carry one through the years and hardships of changes. Beautifully done, tim.

I really liked this chapter for all its "bits" that formed a whole to leave me smiling and satisfied at the end.

What bits you aask? Why, the funny bits, the sexy bits, the family unity bits, the 'our life is coming together and moving forward' bits. And then, there was Lou's trip down memory lane. That was sweet.

tim, as I appreciated your choice of words in a previous chapter - the same flavours reference -  I liked the following in this chapter:

Out beyond the window, the breeze made the leaves on the trees flutter, they flipped exposing the shiny top and matte undersides. It looked like a dance, a celebration of the setting sun.

I've never thought of describing leaves that way - shiny top, matte undersides - but it is spot on, isn't it? I know I'm going to be thinking of this description next time I look - and really see - the leaves.

As always, nicely done. :)

Thank you very much, Reader. I'm so pleased to know this worked for you. Your comments about the leaves, well thank you, made me feel good..

xoxo

I think I would have loved to be there selecting the clothes and logo placement. I designed a couple t-shirts when I was volunteering for the AIDS Project in the very late ‘80s. They were all hand-drawn (with rub-off lettering) since I only had a dot-matrix printer and an Apple IIe at the time. One featured a stylized drawing of the Bay Area with all the cities in the county listed – I had people put a stick-on dot next to their city when we marched in the SF Pride Parade that year! For another year, they told me they were going to use v-neck soccer-style shirts, so I modified the logo and lettering to resemble the outline fonts used for college teams – and then they used a regular t-shirt instead. But I had lots of fun coming up with the ideas!

I think I should buy a couple of those print-your-own-design iron-on kits since I have more experience and a much better computer & printer setup these days! I’d have to buy an iron or borrow one from a neighbor. (I hate ironing and would rather wear wrinkled clothes – I had to do ironing when I was temporary Visual Merchandise Coordinator [ie Display Person] and hated it!  ;-)

My own trips out with Michael, doing everyday things are often full of laughter ... even yesterday at Costco!!  So, it felt right putting Louis and Don there, in my head they are people, so mundane and everyday things have to be done.  Thanks for reading and for your comments Parker.. they mean a lot to me. xoxo
