2020- Spring - Full Moon Entry

Explosions - 4. Departure

Resembling children with a new plaything, the Atlanteans delighted in their new abilities. The young were the initial leapers, but soon the air filled with clicks and water splashing when the sleek forms crashed back into the water. The return trip to the main island took significantly less time; most of those able to take on their new animal form swam. At Anul’s request, Alketa remained behind with Basilios and Tejan.

“My children, Onaeco’s assistance does not come without a price. Alketa, as leader, you must pay.”

The feeling his life was forfeit returned. Alketa was ready to sacrifice himself if it would ensure his people’s survival. “I’m willing to lay myself down in exchange for the safety of my clan.”

“Spoken like a true leader. Your unselfishness is what inspired me to arrange your salvation. Do not fret, we do not demand your life. However, from this day forward, you and those who will take the mantle of leadership in the future will not mate and settle with only one female. You will father sons and daughters, but permanent attachment is forbidden. Unless it’s with another male.”

Although surprised, Alketa was not disturbed; the intimate relationship he had developed with Basilios was something he could foresee continuing.

“Finally, I must warn you not to be tempted by the freedom of the ocean. Should you not reclaim your human form on a regular basis, the shift to a seafaring creature would become permanent.”

 

 

Temple Island was the first casualty. The frequency and duration of earth shakes grew daily, until one day it cracked in half and sank below the waves. Panic amidst humans did not extend to Alketa’s people. In the ensuing turmoil, they packed their belongings, those unable to swim boarded the waiting ships, and headed east. The remainder of the former wolf people followed.

Left behind were Tejan, his concubines, children, and a dozen or so followers. They had decided to eschew a human existence and instead pursue a life under water amidst the ruins of sunken Atlantis.

I blame my inability to write a chapter a day on social isolation. I need to be around people so I can steal borrow lines for dialogue.

Oh, please...

Now, if a book ended with the main character being arrested, a friend and their family being in a crash, or a relative being shot, THAT would be a cliffie. Not that I'd ever do that, of course. :P

For me it's social injustice that gets the writing juices flowing.I have lots of ideas right now. All I need is time and motivation.

I thought I'd gotten over the trauma of that story ending, but you just brought it crashing back. Bah humbug on you.

As a fan of mythology this story really appealed to me! It is a bit of a departure for you, but your ability to tell a tale shone through. Also your talent with characters and dialogue were put to good use. Thanks for this very enjoyable interpretation of the Atlantean story!

Mythology's not my best subject to write about, but I needed to get this one and the sequel out. Been thinking about them for like 5 years. As I just told someone, I'm itching to write about the fires in Australia, the pandemic, and Black Lives Matter protests. Hopefully soon.

Great story, Carlos. I realise I started by saying this kind of story is not usually my thing, but I really enjoyed this, the retelling of the tale of Atlantis, the tribe from wolves to dolphins and mermaids/ mermen. Which goes to show you’re never too old to try something new. You said this is not your usual style so I’ll have to check out your other work.

Thanks, bud. Glad you enjoyed it. If you want to read something more representative of my style, try Malibu. I posted the third of nine chapters this morning. Although the protagonists and a few of the supporting cast are recycled from a series, the story stands on its own. I included enough detail to ensure reading the entire saga they were spun off from would not be necessary.

LMAO - Not sure why I never replied until now. Do you want me to also mention an incident in Mexico? By definition that wasn't a cliffhanger but... :P

Depending on when things settle down over there, I'll look for ways to trash the Russians and praise the Ukranians in a future story.

This is a great short story that is complete and rich in imagination.  It stands by itself proudly, but I am excited that this is just the beginning of a very unique universe.  I like the way this ends as a celebration of a new lycan form and culture.  It does leave many avenues for further exploration.  Thanks, Carlos for taking a risk!
