The Spice of Life - 1. Chapter 1 - The Spice of Life

I am not a poet, but here is my humble offering for the 2025 Poetry Anthology - "Diversity".

Like in the song, give me a home
Where the buffalo roam and the deer and antelope play
But there’s no reason to stop there
When there’s such an array of animals to choose from

I want to live in a world that’s varied
Where animals of all different shapes and sizes abound
Along with the roles each one plays
The eco-system won’t function properly without them all

What about some feathered friends
Wouldn’t I want a blue jay, a robin or a cardinal as well?
Also a few of our cute forest friends
So, let’s add some squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits too

Some animals are there to delight us
The songs of the birds, the antics of squirrels and rabbits
While some are predators, others prey
And without each one, the world wouldn’t function properly

A stream or small river would be nice
Stocked with enormous quantities of trout, bluegill, and bass
And a few wolves and bears to boot
To keep the deer and antelope populations under control

That’s why variety is so important
Each one has a very important role in the scheme of things
And it doesn’t only apply to animals
It also includes the flowers, crops, trees, moss, and lichen

It is also true about different people
Red, Yellow, Black, Brown, White, and those of mixed races
Gay, Straight, Bi, Trans, or non-binary
Diversity is what ensures that everything works out just right

Amen, Bill! I love this poem and its message. We must respect life, whether human or otherwise. Callous disregard hurts all of us, and offends me deeply. There are lessons to be learned from Mother Nature, but only if we pay attention. Thanks for this! Cheers!

Thank you, Gary.  Partially following the beliefs of indigenous peoples, we must heed nature before it's too late.  Yes, there are some animals and plants that might be harmful to humans, they have a role to play in the scheme of things and derve to coexist.  There are also people we may disagree with on religious or political grounds, but all viewpoints are necessary to come up with a balance that we all can live with.  Thank you so much for your kind response to my poem.

With so much effort being put forth to stifle diversity today, how refreshing to be reminded of the need for diversity to keep the world functioning properly.  Great writing, Bill.

Thank you, Tony.  I'm glad my humble offering was able to elicit favorable reactions and acceptance.  It's my belief that we, as a society, are harming nature, wildlife, and minority groups, both those of color, different religious beliefs, and different sexual orientations.  Hopefully, this can be corrected before irreparable damange has been done.

Diversity is what ensures that everything works out just right

And ignoring or destroying diversity ensures that everything is all f**ked up! All created things are precious, and all people are beloved. We are stewards of creation and of one another, and we are massively failing in that duty. The consequences are already becoming painfully apparent. We must demand change and then we must BE the change!
