David C. McLavic - 48. Chapter 48

Time changes and the changes in my life were of a magnitude that affected a lot of people. Uncle Carl lost his farm, as I had predicted. The men who worked the farm bought it, Jim told me he and Marie moved to the farm and gave their home in the town to Uncle Carl. He said that Aunt Martha is ill and it looks like she will be joining Carl soon. Uncle Carl doesn’t go to the Farmers Market anymore. His friends told him he was stupid and didn’t want anything to do with him. I thought that was a hard price to pay for his mistakes, but Jim said it was appropriate.

Uncle Harry and Aunt Dorothy retired to their cabin. Miss Lily went with them but she wasn’t well. Peter met a young lady and got married. He still worked for Uncle Harry. Dad said Uncle Harry and he decided to convert their old home into a bed and breakfast. Peter would run that for them.

Life moves on, Uncle Joe returned to the Reservation and his cabin was empty for a little while. Dad said on one of his visits to see Uncle Joe, some of the men wanted to come and stay in his cabin during the summer. So now it is a summer vacation spot for friends from the reservation. I expect soon there will be a permanent Indian living there. It was meant to be and so it will be.

Dad is talking about returning to Egypt to finish his first expedition there. I remember him telling me he had to return early when his father took ill and passed on.

Mom has died, and is buried on the farm. Jim said she should have had a better life there and now maybe she will have an eternal rest there.

Beth Ann has three children the youngest is a girl that looks like her. The other two boys look like their dad. Beth Ann is happy and I’m glad. The boys are suppose to come out and stay with me for a few weeks. I guess I’ll have to buy fishing gear.

Bobby has gone to live with Dad while attending school. He said he wants to be an architect, He was home schooled and took his high school equivalence test and passed. Now he is looking forward to college and I think Dad is looking forward to have a young man around again.

As for me, I have begun to believe that I am not meant to live alone. Wolf now chases rabbits in a different world. Laying him to rest was difficult. He was my pal, where I went, he went. But I am not alone. My Indians friends stop by for tea and cookies. On one of their visits, they left a young boy about the age when I first met Bobby. And now, according to Bobby, I had a son. I don’t think I’ll ever be alone. In a way I like to think Carl is looking out for me.

I need to go now, we are going fishing in Crystal Lake.

The story of a young man who had experienced the death of a close friend, found a purpose and peace has come to an end, or has it.
I apologize for taking so long to post this story. I found out that age slows everything. Now to tie up loose ends. I will try and post more often, try but not guarantee
