David C. McLavic - 40. Chapter 40
When Uncle Joe was ready to go home, Bobby, Wolf, and I drove him there. I had a feeling I would see Uncle Joe often. Returning, we had Marie's cookies, pies, and tarts. I wanted to include some of her bread, but Bobby said his mother made bread.
We had no sooner arrived and had all the packages in the cabin when Wolf growled.
"You have company coming, David."
I went to the outhouse, from there I could see who was approaching the cabin without being seen. I saw four Indians carrying a chair with an old woman sitting in it.
They carried the woman to the door, and I entered through the back door. When they saw me, they spoke to Bobby, Then they left, leaving the old woman sitting in the rocking chair.
"David, prepare some tea. I think you may have guest for a little while."
While I prepared the tea, I was thinking . "Is she planning on staying here? How will she make it to the out house? I can't carry her. As these thoughts floated through my head. Bobby took some pf the cookies to her. When the tea was ready, Bobby took that also to her. She just sat in that chair, looking at me while drinking the tea and eating the cookies.
In hushed tones, I said,"Bobby, are they going to leave her here with me?"
"I don't know but I don't think so. The head man was here and now she is here. I think they are checking on you."
The woman sat there, drinking two cuos iof tea and eating half of the cookies we brought from Marie's bakery when the door opened and four Indians that carried her entered. I looked at Bobby thinking what next.
Bonny took over, made them a cup of tea and gave the some cookies.Smiling they sat on the floor next to Wolf. When the tea and cookies were finished, they helped the old woman up, helped her back on the chair she arrived on and left, I was confused as to what was going on.
"David, I think you passed the test When the original Indians came, you gave them tea and cookies. The the hed man came and you treated him the same and now, his wife came and I'm sure you have been accepted by them."
"Arre they coming back?"
"Yes, I think you will be visited by them often." What Bobby didn't tell him is that the next visitor may be a young woman offered as a bride.
