David C. McLavic - 38. Chapter 38

There was a banging on the door. Wolf stood up, the hair on his back stood up, Bobby looked scared, "Indians."

I went and opened the door/ There were three; two were from the first group but the third was older and wore an animal skin over his shoulders.

Wolf was on his feet, standing next to me. I knew if they tried to harm me, Wolf would attack. One of the men made a sign. I knew nothing about sign language, so I wished Uncle Joe was with me. Then, who popped up? Bobby.

Bobby surprised me by using sign language, and he answered them. Then everything passed between Bobby, the Indians, and me.

"David, they are curious. Show them your cabin."

I opened the door, they came in. They looked at everything, touched everything. "David, offer them some tea and any sweets you have."

I went to the stove, filled a teapot with water to heat on the stove. When the water was hot, I added the tea leaves. All the time I did this, I had 6 eyes on me. Bobby knew where I kept the cookies, so he got them out, placed them on the table. I poured the tea from the pot into cups and placed them on the table. Bobby took the sugar and added it to their cups. All the time Bobby did this, not a word or grunt was heard. Then Bobby took his cup and took a sip. Now the other two Indians did the same and siled. The third Indian, whom I assumed as of higher rank than the other two. sipped his tea. When Bobby reached for the cookies, there was no hesitation, they helped themselves. The three of them ate the complete package of cookies except for the ones Bobby ate.

After the cookies and tea were gone, the Third Indian, who I assumed must have some rank, stood. The other two followed. Some words were spoken. Bobby replied, and they left.

''Okay, what just happened?"

"Two of the Indians were here before, but Wolf scared them off. The third was their father, and when they told him what they saw, he wanted to see as well. I'm afraid they will be back."

"Why?"

"They live mostly in tents made from animal skins. Today, there aren't that many animals so, they need to find other material for housing. They will probably make a trade, some woman for your cabin."

I looked at Bobby, "No way." I had enough of women in my life. My mother spoiled any chance of me going down that road. But what Bobby said about them wanting my cabin did bother me. This is my home and I won't give it up without a fight.

I couldn't fall asleep that night. The thought of being forced out of my cabin bothered me. The next morning, there was a knock on my door. Honestly, I was afraid of opening it. Wolf didn't growl, which meant it was probably Bobby.
