David C. McLavic - 34. Chapter 34
Now, it seemed someone was at the site every day, and helicopters were beginning to become a daily sight. The builder had a schedule that he wanted to keep. They were shooting to have the cabin finished before any major snowfalls. The weather report was critical and often there were times when it appeared the cabin wouldn't be finished until after January's winter snows, at its worst.
When the blocks were laid on a concrete foundation, David began to become impatient. He was anxious to get his cabin finished.
The wait time was getting to David. He decided to go home for a few days. He hadn't told anyone he was leaving but when he didn't return after a few hours, Bobby became concerned.
Michael at the Lodge told Bobby to be patient. "He will be back. He's probably buying carpeting, linens, and utensils for the cabin."
Two weeks later, helicopters could be heard again. Bobby was anxious, but David wasn't there. He decided to go to the post office and make a phone call. When he got there, he saw David getting gas at the gas station next to the post office.
Driving back to the Lodge, Bobby told David he was afraid that Dvid was leaving without saying goodbye. David started to laugh, "Bpbby, after all the work we did, you thought I would leave? This will be my home. Listen!"
David stopped the jeep, listening to see if they could hear helicopters. Now they were in a hurry and it was a good thing that there were no cars on the road because David drove the jeep all out Arriving at the Lodge, they saw the first helicopter. Now they had to get to the top of the mountain.
As they arrived, the first copter was getting into position to lower the back third of the cabin. There were four men on the ground, who would assist in positioning the cabin sections. David was excited but not as excited as Bobby. He couldn't stand still as the section was slowly lowered. The men at ground level managed to move the section over the block foundation. If you were watching you knew these men had done this many times. It was like a dance, the way they moved the section as it dropped.
With this section in place and locked into position, they were ready for the next section.
David and Bobby watched as the second copter approached with the middle section of the cabin. Like the section already in place, this section was guided in and settled into position. Now they were anxious to see the last section. Now they were anxious to see the last section. This section was a little more difficult as the chimneys were separate.
With all of the sections in place, the men bolted a skirt on the sections that hung over the block foundation, acting as a shield against weather (or animals) from getting under the cabin. The skirt would also prevent the sections from moving off the blocks.
The last thing was the installation of the chimneys, one for the fireplace and one for the cook stove. Gavid showed them the drawing he had for the kitchen. With this drawing in hand, they knew precisely where to put the chimney connection for the cook stove flue pipe.
David looked at his cabin home. The smile told everyone he was happy. Signing some papers, he took his copies and prepared to enter his cabin home.
