David C. McLavic - 33. Chapter 33
Arriving at the mountain, Bobby helped me carry the lumber to the outhouse. He took the books home to show his mother and I'm sure to read them as well.
With his help and a few of the men, it took me a week to finish the shed. The last thing was to place a finish on the roof. I stopped at the supply store which once had supplied the lumberjacks and now supplies some of the builders at Crystal Lake. I ordered rolls of peel-and-stick roofing material. When that arrived, I covered the roof of the shed. Now I needed to buy sacks of lime for the outhouse.
Returning home with 10 50-lb sacks of lime, I told the lodge men I'd buy them dinner if they helped me carry the lime to the outhouse shed. I didn't realize that dinner included several bottles of beer. But the lime did get to the top of the mountain and stored in the shed.
Now I just needed to wait until I heard from the cabin people.
Several weeks passed by when one day I was sitting in the Lodge helping Bobby read one of my books when I heard a helicopter. Running outside, looking where the noise was coming from, I took off for the top of the mountain. By the time I got there, the helicopter had landed, and two men were waiting for me.
"Are you David McLavic?" "Yes, how may I help you?"
"It's more like we are here to help you. We have your correspondence and drawings for a cabin and according to the coordinates you are going to have it here on this mountain."
"Yes, I have finished the outhouse and I am anxious to start on the cabin."
"Do you have a place here where we can review your drawings with you?"
"Yes, we have a place at the Lodge. There are tables where we can lay out my drawings."
Heading to the lodge, one couldn't tell which one, David or Bobby was more excited. All David could think about was his cabin was finally going to become a reality.
Over the next few hours, they went over David's drawings. They suggested some changes which David noted on his drawings. One question they had was, what is a window refrigerator?
Laughing David explained the window design that allowed the cold air to pass through the attached box. David watched them and he knew it would be incorporated in their other designs.
Before leaving, the men told David they had some papers for him to sign and a check as well. David read over the papers which essentially assigned all rights to his design to the cabin company. Also, there was a royalty check for any cabins sold that were similar to Uncle Joe's cabin.
David didn't need the money but the idea his design was being used and sold, made him feel successful. What David didn't know he was being evaluated for a position on the Board of the cabin company. The company was quite successful in selling cabins that David had designed for Uncle Joe. For David, it was recognition of his talents but for the company, it was a way to ensure there would be no competition.
Now David knows his cabin will become a reality. One couldn't tell who was more excited, David or Bobby.
David went home to tell his dad about the cabin and the discussions with the people from the cabin company. David was proud but his dad was even more proud. A letter was sent off to Uncle Harry.
The one person David wanted to tell , he couldn't. Uncle Joe told him to pray to the Great Father in the Sky and He will pass the message on to Carl. Every time David thinks about Carl, he feels the terrible loss allver again.
On returning to the mountain from home, David now found concrete blocks at the site. Bobby told himhelicopters came and delivered concrete blocks. "They left a letter for you. Michael at the Lodge has it."
While David was at home, the company flew ina survetor who laid out the cabin. With his layout, they were able to draft drawings of the base of the cabin. Th cabin would be supported on concrete blocks that needed to be cemented in place according to the design. To take into account the level changes on the site, the layout for the back support would was one block high where as the front would be two blocks high. The sides would be tapered from one block to two blocks. In some areas the side blocks would be laid at different levels to insure a flat surface when the cabin was delivered.
