Musings of a Wordsmith - 3. A Quandary

Out of place,
here and now,
although there and then.

Aware
of what is,
thinking
of what could be.

A rainy winter day,
recalled solitude
and present company.

Longing for the gift of ubiquity
which will allow, at last,
to meet the longings of a heart
full of scattered affections.

On the shores of the Mediterranean
longing for the Pacific,
feeling on the banks of river Turia
the calling from Tormes and Guadalquivir.

On the shore of solitude
enjoying a future memory
which will sublimate
time and space.

Turia, Tormes and Guadalquivir are rivers in Spain.

I think most of us have felt like this at some point, so you give voice to many in this poem. I like the turn of phrase at "to meet the longings of a heart"

For my part, I especially responded to a heart full of scattered affections. It’s exquisite. That particular phrase arrested my reading, and I had to start over and re-read.

@AC Benus, @Parker Owens, I feel so honored that you take the time to react and comment…

The quandary I write about in this poem is quite real, family, friends, places where I feel at home are really all around the world. For a long time, a (long) family weekend implied about 2000 miles driving… Places where my heart wants to settle in are really scattered all around, I never seem to be able to settle for a place without feeling I’m leaving precious people behind…

Thanks for reading and commenting!

I agree with @Parker Owens... this is exquisite... to meet the longings of a heart
full of scattered affections.

I understand this is about family, but it can apply to so many situations, even the longings for places that are special to us. It made me think about love, and how divided I felt at one time in my life.

In the final verse I felt hope... time is often an enemy, but it can also be a friend. Cheers!
