You owe it to yourself to read this story if only to understand the finishing line...

"Now we get to choose it, deliberately, and with everything we’ve learned. And that, I think, makes all the difference. The truth didn’t erase the past. But it gave us a future. One that was better than either of us thought we’d ever get. And that alone makes it all worth it."

Class reunions aren't necessarily a nightmare to me like @Gary L, but I did relate somewhat to the MC. Went to one reunion, was pretty boring, have no desire to go to another. But the story will probably bring back memories for anyone that reads is.

So why are you still reading reviews? The story is so much better.

I think we all still have memories of being in high school.  For some the memories bring back smiles and warm feeling, but for other they might bring back memories that they've been trying to forget, but still linger in the deep recesses in their minds.  This story explores those deeply hidden emotions and causes the main character to search his high school year book to prepare for the reunion.

This is a wonderfully written story about one young man who's spent years trying to distance himself from his hometown and those memories, but after receiving a totally unexpected invitation to his 20th class reunion, he decides to attend.  Even though he's hoping to remain unnoticed and blend into the surroundings, he is totally taken aback over what happens while he's there.  If you wish to discover why he's surprised, you'll just have to read this emotionally packed short story, and you'll be glad you did.

Reunion is a quietly charged story about memory, attraction, and the complicated weight the past can hold. The protagonist and narrator of the story is Jake, whose high school years were overshadowed by his feelings for Derek - a popular boy whose teasing was mild on the surface but cut deeply because it came from someone Jake secretly admired. @Jeff Burton skillfully shows how a single relationship can color an entire chapter of life, blurring the line between fondness and hurt, longing and shame. Through Jake’s reflections, the story explores denial, the way unresolved emotions distort memory, and the fragile hope of rewriting one’s history when old faces resurface. Subtle, emotionally layered, and resonant, Reunion captures the bittersweet truth that the past is never as simple as it seemed at the time.
