Sub-genres: Rich Boy, Grimdark

Imagine a fantasy city where a small clique of powerful families control everything — government decisions, trade, justice, and who gets to have a say in political matters. The House of Enaleon is one of these powerful families. Having just bested a rival house, their star is rising in the ruling senate, and they have attracted a lot of attention. Jonah, a young scion of an Enaleon side-line and a powerful magician, has been instrumental in his family's quest for power. All seems quiet in the political arena, and Jonah has to face his family because he is about to break with tradition - he has fallen in love.

A peek into a world that feels so deeply established as it it always existed? Fantastical characters thrust into high stakes peril? Love and loss? What more could you ask for if you're a fan of dark fantasy?

Response from the author:

Many thanks! High praise indeed!

Although not a fantasy fan, I gave this ago and was glad I did.  World-building is v good and coherent. I liked the likable characters and loved the Magister.  As others have commented, the ending is abrupt but powerful. Well done.

Response from the author:

Many thanks! The characters "spoke" to me. They were easy to write.
