What It Takes

I really liked this story.  The character development is excellent, and I love the twist at the end.  I was thinking that Kyle was a good and devoted friend, then in the blink of an eye, he turns into a psycho.

Kyle and Oliver are dormmates and Kyle has a crush on Oliver.  The problem is that Kyle is gay and Oliver is straight.  They are friends, though, and Oliver doesn't know about the crush, even though Kyle seems to be devoted to him.  Oliver invites Kyle to go to a party with him, mainly because he has to bring someone, rules of the party, and what happens there isn't what anyone could possibly expect.  If you want to find out what that is, then get comfortable, open this short story in your browser, and prepare for a surprise.  Even with all of these clues, I still doubt you'll be able to figure out what's coming.

There is definitely a truth revealed here. But buckle up, as it's a very skillfully portrayed, bumpy ride.

This is actually a pretty unique take on the typical "crush story," and this is anything but typical. It's well written, the protagonist is layered beautifully, with frightening detail. Definitely worth the read.

What starts as a relatable, witty slice-of-college-life story quickly deepens into something far more intense. The narrator, Kyle, comes across as charmingly self-aware, even a little awkward - the kind of character you think you’ve figured out. But by the end, the ground shifts beneath you, and it’s clear there’s much more going on than meets the eye. A sharply written piece with a killer cliffhanger that makes you want to reread from the start.
