March 4th Round Robin

A Round Robin isn’t a fat bird.

It’s actually a lot of things, but the only interesting definition concerning prompts is that it is a form of storytelling. There are several variations. Let’s try two.

PT# 27

Tell a story that begins at the same place as it ends.

PT# 28

Find at least one fellow author and tell a story together. Write its paragraphs or sentences alternatively.

I really like both of these.  A good friend of mine in high school and I used to write stories together all the time.  We'd each have our own characters and then just start writing without discussing anything ahead of time.  We would write a sentence, paragraph, page, whatever seemed to fit, then hand it over to whomever was next.  It was a lot of fun.  I still have our notebooks and pages of loose leaf paper we wrote them on.

I've tried to organize one of those, but never followed up.

Here's a pretty good example of a round-robin.  Collision

If you want to do one of these, you will need to agree on several things. When we did Collision, we created and distributed a document called the Game Plan. In this document, we set the ground rules and then let the individual authors run with it to flesh it out.

In the Game Plan, you have to set up characters, setting and the ground rules for authors to agree on (No Brian, there won't be a zombie apocalypse during your chapter bro). From there, get going.

I tried a round robin once, I guess my story start didn't appeal to the others.

@JamesSavikHaving a game plan is always good, for a prompt it can be short, unless you plan a longer story.

And I totally understand why Brian can't have the zombie apocalypse in his chapter, they would clash with the vampires living in the old St. Clair's mausoleum and the ghost in Berta Meyer's mansion.

@Carlos HazdayThere's no time like present to remedy past mistakes...I'm only saying.

Too much on my plate.

You start the round robin, and I may join in. Some thirty or more years ago, the Miami Herald's Sunday magazine rounded up about a dozen area writers and did one. A bunch of best selling mystery authors wrote one of the funniest things I ever read. Since it was set in South Florida, drug dealers, flamingos, and manatees were featured prominently. I've always wanted to be part of a similar project.

Me too, I just started a new story which may become a series,  But,  I always wanted to do this again, soooo I might open my bar again and let's see what happens. My motto is to be understood as a warning though.

@Aditus, I've taken up your challenge on P#27 and wrote a short story that's just under 1100 words in length, but now what do I do with it?  Is there a special place these get posted, like the anthologies, or am I supposed to post it with my other stories?  Please let me know.

@Bill W There is no special place for prompts. Please post the story with your other stories ...or you could create a prompt collection and add it  to your list of stories and post there all the other prompt stories you're hopefully going to write in the future. We hope we can inspire you with our prompts.

Thank you!

We've been remiss about creating threads for prompt stories in the Writer's Club, but we'll get those added soon.  Like Addy said, post the story with your other stories or as part of a collection.  Stories under 1k words should be posted as part of a collection, but since you're above that, you're fine to post it as a stand-alone.  We encourage people to post a link to their story in the appropriate prompt thread, so people know where to find prompt responses and for us to feature occasionally as part of the blog.
