This is a genre that is very hard to do well.  We have some authors that have tried and done a great job, but I wish a few more would try their hand at it.

I have a time traveling, alien encounter, present to the past story I've been plotting out for a few years now. I even visited the ghost town in the mountains of california to get a feel for the location, my trouble starts with the language of the day, the inclusion of animals (i know nothing about that) and an overall sense of how late 1800's people behaved. But its a great premise that spans a hundred years and saves the future of the world. 

I really wish I could find a path into the main story, I've written all the way up to when they go back and then the dialogue feels too modern and the setting unrealistic.

@Jason Rimbaud -- here is a possibility you are free to use if you wish.  At the introduction to each chapter, mention that this takes place on a parallel or alternate Earth very similar to our own, but sometimes with minor differences.

@Headstall and @Andrew Todd have good stories in this list.  I need to branch out and read other authors who write Western stories.  Thank you, @Myr, for these Deep Dives.
