BeaStKid Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Don't know if this is the right place. Guess it is. This thread is for all those who are somewhat unfamiliar with Internet Lingo + shortforms. I hope to have this thread as a dictionary for those terms. Let's all contribute.

Actually, I'm almost positive we have one somewhere in the Lounge. Hmm, lets see, my own additions: BBS - Be Back Soon IDK - I don't know WW - Wrong Window BTW - By the way WTF - What the .... WTG - Way to go! OMG - traditionally "Oh my god", although when I use it I usually mean "Oh my gosh" LOL - Laughing out loud I'll see if I can come up with more later. Have a great day all! Kevin

Zapp Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 FFS is pretty straight foward, For F***s Sake! Gets a bit of a workout on MSN.
Site Administrator Graeme Posted November 21, 2007 Site Administrator Posted November 21, 2007 BeaStKid, you seem to have done what I did -- a quick google search to find a list (and his list seems remarkably similar to the one I found -- I only posted the ones I use). Oh, and ASAP isn't Internet lingo -- it was widely used before the Internet became popular

Oh, and ASAP isn't Internet lingo -- it was widely used before the Internet became popular I just compiled the various abbreviations everyone posted here. Nothing more!!
glomph Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 A couple that aren't acronyms or abbreviations: "Meatspace" - The "real" world, as opposed to cyberspace. "Dead-tree version" - something printed on paper, as opposed to a digital version "Snail mail" - physical mail as delivered by the postal service, as opposed to the almost instantaneous (with luck) email LSMFT - "Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco" - used to pad out some ridiculously long acronyms that are intentional parodies as a bit of humor for those of us old enough to remember cigarette ads on TV
colinian Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 A few more... NOI - no offense intended YKWIM - you know what I mean TAH - take a hike (i.e., go away) NFW - no freakin' way (substitute your favorite F word) UYA - up your a** IFCBI - I freakin' can't believe it (substitute your favorite F word) SFB - s**t for brains w00t - we owned the other team (used as a way to show you're really happy) SOOL - s**t out of luck SOS - help! STFU - shut the freak up! (substitute your favorite F word) GWM - gay white male GAM - gay Asian male GBM - gay black male RUG - are you gay? JK - just kidding! Colin
Menzoberranzen Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Aside from the universal ones like lol, nvm, IMO, and the like, I can't abide internet abbreviations. Really, is it that difficult to type out words in full? I also think that it one of the many contributing causes of the atrocious grammar and syntax of today's youth. Menzo (who almost went on a slightly off-topic rant)

But I wanted this thread in order to understand what those guys who do use them want to say.

IMO...oh nvm. idk y i started this post NEway, lol btw, take care all, TTFN -Kevin Very clever I encountered another one yesterday: iirc -- If I remember correctly. And, of course, there's what I call the '8' lingo: sk8tr -- skater l8tr -- later str8 -- straight

Really, is it that difficult to type out words in full? I also think that it one of the many contributing causes of the atrocious grammar and syntax of today's youth. Menzo (who almost went on a slightly off-topic rant) Most of these are cell phone IM (uh, that's "Instant Messaging" for the non-cognoscenti) and TM ("text messaging") abbreviations, where space (and time) are important. Most shouldn't be used when posting to forums and especially shouldn't be used in stories, except when IM or TM is a specific subject therein. Colin

Even in my posts, the use of this 'lingo' is minimal!!
AFriendlyFace Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 Don't forget Graeme's "iirc" which means "If I recall correctly" Also: "TMI" - Too much info, "TLC" - Tender love and care These aren't really internet exclusive, but they come up from time to time. "Gn" for Good Night" is pretty coming too, I occasionally see "GM" for "good morning" as well (only I seldom get up early enough to see it ). I could give you a ton of card related ones, but they probably won't be very relevant to the average user. Oh speaking of ones specific to communities/games, "RPG" - Role Playing Game, is probably common enough that it ought to be include. There are also a ton of gay specific ones, but since many of them get pretty graphic I won't include those, lol. -Kevin

I hear both on a semi-regular basis (video games, anyone?) and so those don't offend me when used in a forum. Conversely, the day someone says IIRC to me in real life is the day I throw myself off a bridge. Menzo
