Santino Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 I'm looking for someone with experience playing in an alternative or punk band (particularly a drummer), who can read some scenes and give me feedback on authenticity. The story I'm working on is a WIP, but focuses on a group of young guys who go on vacation to rural Louisiana to focus on their music and their new album. It's southern gothic/paranormal, but the focus is on the music for the first chunk of the book. Thanks in advance.
JamesSavik Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 (edited) It all depends a lot on how serious the band really is. Some party all the time. Others are much more businesslike. Where ever they stay, they'll need a sound stage with an engineers booth to accomplish any real work. This is where things get a little weird. Some producers want all of their tapes and production work to be 100% digital and others want theirs 100% analog. The analog camp believes that analog equipment gives a truer recording which can easily be digitized from master tapes. The digital camp believes that the end product is going to be digital- it might as well start that way. There is very little in the way of middle ground as the equipment can only be one or the other. In south LA around New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Alexandria there are many small studios that record the local blues, soul. zydeco, country, gospel and rock. Shreveport and Monroe too but their scene isn't as big. Edited October 4, 2014 by jamessavik 1
Santino Posted October 5, 2014 Author Posted October 5, 2014 Thanks James! That information is very useful. The band in question is indie, and have never been signed with a label. The story focuses on them trying to write new material so there's a handful of practice scenes and discussions of music/writing musics. I love music, but as someone who doesn't even play an instrument, it's difficult to "fake" that kind of stuff, so I worry about it coming off unrealistic.
JamesSavik Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Louisiana Trivia The circle enclosing New Orleans, Sliddell, Hammond, Thibodeoux, Baton Rouge, Alexandria and Opelousas is called Acadiana. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acadiana It is the home of the unique Cajun Culture and you really should visit. The food, the music, the partying is all very unique. People from outside the region are always astonished discover that there really are people in that great big swamp.

I can take a look at your practice room scenes for you. I have plenty of experience working in and with bands at the rehearsal stage, as well as with gigs, and I've written stories where I've used my experience too. If you want examples, you can check out Nemesis 2. Chapters 2, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 12 have band scenes, I believe. Edited October 14, 2014 by Thorn Wilde
