Since it was well in place in my elementary school in the 50's I checked this out Page.  It actually started during WW2. It was cheap and food was quickly metabolized for quick energy needed by soldiers in the field.  It was one of my first meals in the first grade.  I can still remember the look of that cafeteria.🤪

I do hope your green thumb is not deadly like mine.  I've tried to grow tomatoes several times with no luck. :facepalm:🥴 

I always have good luck with tomatoes. :)
