Leprechauns are tricksters and part of the Fairy. The little shoemakers are well known for creating beautiful shoes that others pay handsomely for, the leprechauns are paid in gold by other creatures of fairy, thereby creating a pot of gold for each. You've managed to capture one and are faced with a hard decision. You may take his pot of gold, thereby also taking his magic, or attempt to keep him hostage for three nights and win three wishes from the leprechaun.
