Hackneyed expressions

To stir the pot, I'm starting a list of hackneyed expressions that should be avoided by authors.

 

My nomination: "they make a cute couple" or variants thereof.

My nomination: "they make a cute couple" or variants thereof.

I would try to avoid this in narration, but people DO say it (often in a sickly sweet tone, to make it a joke) so I think it's fine in dialogue. I would just be questioning the sanity of any character that says it seriously.... :wacko:

 

(while/after walking through the rain). He was wet and miserable.

hard, soft, good, bad, quietly, or slightly.
