  1. Anything with zombies creeps me out. Doesn't matter if they're fast zombies or slow zombies; people zombies or dog zombies -- they're all creepy. The ultraviolence in A Clockwork Orange was disturbing, but I didn't find it at all creepy. Different strokes, I guess.
  2. And this might belong there as well....but it's what's been making me laugh for the past couple of days Dan Savage's New Threat to Rick Santorum from Dan Savage Turkey jerkey, indeed!
  3. I used to drink Maxwell House or Folgers all day, but I've developed a preference for quality over quantity. These days, I have two 12 oz mugs of coffee every morning..... ... brewed in a press pot to proper strength ... with freshly roasted beans (less than 10 days out of the roaster) ... that are ground while the water is heating ... black, no sweetener. My custom blend is a mix of beans from Brazil, Ethiopia, Java and Yemen...all with chocolate highlights...to get a balanced flavor in the cup. Most days, that's sufficient caffeine, but I sometimes supplement with either dark chocolate or iced tea (which is almost mandatory with meals in the South).
  4. If you're into dark comedies, I'd suggest: A Boy and His Dog Harold and Maude Wristcutters: A Love Story
  5. My favorite is #3 http://web.mit.edu/j.../spam/mine.html
  6. When my house burned down, I got out with my two dogs and the clothes I was wearing. If it happens again, priorities will be: Keepsakes - photos & mementos that can't be replaced Important Documents - wallet, passport, household inventory (last time insurance adjuster wanted to see proofs of purchase), mortgage papers, etc. Data backup - music, photos, videos, etc. that would be difficult to replace but not impossible And just an FYI....although nothing in the fireproof box ignited, the entire contents was turned to charcoal. Off site safe deposit box is recommended as is "Renters Insurance" (to cover your property loss and your liability when the landlord sues you for burning down his house).
  7. I keep hearing this one (radio, SNL, etc) .... great tune & very creative video
  8. Cheers, Stu!
  9. Heard this on the radio and got hooked....

    Chapter 1

Your stories keep getting better & better. Interesting characters, vivid imagery that set the context for the story -- I especially liked the detail that telling the gas station attendant to "keep the change" from a $5 bill for a 10 gallon gasoline purchase constituted being a big tipper, but then, I remember buying gas for 20 cents/gallon. Looking forward to the next chapter!
  11. It's Sunday now and I didn't see anything like this in my neighborhood: NOTE: Don't click the link if you have delicate sensibilities -- intended for those with a dark sense of humor.
  12. Wow...what a great video...thanks for posting the link. I've been listening to 21 over and over all week and that's my favorite tune on the album. Here's what I've got going with it:
  13. Unless the content has digital rights management protection, you can usually convert it to a Kindle supported format without too much effort. Calibre ebook management is a shareware program that converts from/to several unprotected formats including epub & mobi. Most of the eBooks that you buy from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. are protected so be careful to get a format that will display on your device. Amazon has a free download for Mobipocket Creator which will let you take text or HTML and compile it into a Kindle compatible format. I've converted a few longer stories from GA, Nifty, etc. this way.
  14. Weekend is finally here and I'm listening to one of my all time favorite guilty pleasures. Not sure why the video was "Banned in Britain" (I've seen much worse than this on broadcast TV when I've been in London) Enjoy!
  15. Retro Rockin' today
  16. I've been listening to Cee-Lo Green -- "The Lady Killer" -- third track -- a lot. It has an audacious belligerence that makes me laugh. I'd post a link but even the name violates the community standards rules (it's the potty mouth version, not the sanitized one that Gwynneth Paltrow did on Glee). Second track is almost as good so:
  17. I don't usually tell redneck jokes because they might embarrass many of my relatives....but Jeff Foxworthy used to have a stand-up routine where all the jokes started with the phrase "You might be a redneck if..." and ended with an amusing punchline. At lunch one day, a coworker was trying to share part of the previous night's routine and recited the punchline "the directions to your house include the phrase 'take the next dirt road'". I had to tell him that the directions to my house included the phrase '...take the next dirt road. When you get to the 'road ends' sign, keep driving for 200 yards to the blue house on the left."
  18. Lately, I've been listening mostly to the blues....Delta Blues, Memphis Blues, Texas Blues, Rhythm & Blues...it's all good.
  19. Cheers to good Queen Vic and her beloved Prince Albert :king:
  20. With temps in the 80's this week (that's hi 20's for you metric folks), it's time to break out the Sapphire & Tonic
  21. Well, the story needs to tell a good story....something that catches my interest. Most of the time I decide within the first couple of paragraphs whether or not to keep reading. Next, I like to know what the characters are feeling....don't really care about the menu each time they eat or the designer clothes they wear when they go out on a date or which moves from the Kama Sutra they practice when they hook up -- unless it progresses the story line.
  22. No coffee by 10:00 am and I'm in full withdrawal (whether I'm out of bed & awake or not) --- and it's got to be good coffee, not that stuff from the grocery
  23. Delurking for a first post (assuming I can figure out how this editor works ) I've got pretty eclectic tastes in music, but my most recent favorite is Kelly Joe Phelps ("Shine Eyed Mister Zen") (sorry, couldn't figure out how to embed the player) Newish releases I've spent money on recently and enjoy enough to recommend include: The Avett Brothers "Emotionalism" The Black Keys "Brothers" The Decemberists "The King is Dead" Cee-Lo Green "The Lady Killer" Los Lobos "Tin Can Trust" Ray Wylie Hubbard "a: Enlightenment b: Endarkenment" Iron & Wine "Kiss Each Other Clean" All time favorites include: Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" Billy Joel "Piano Man" Ann Peebles "I Can't Stand the Rain" Average White Band "AWB" George Clinton Harry Nilsson Janis Joplin
