  1. Happy Birthday, Joey! Our pal Joey is celebrating his 27th birthday today while out on the range for a two week cattle drive.
  2. Sadly true; spellcheckers aren't complete. They don't contain all the words you will use, just the most common ones. To make matters worse, they don't hesitate to give you a lot of useless suggestions. A writer needs to use other sources to assure a correct selection. Remember that a spellchecker only checks the spelling of the word you typed. If you typed a homophone, it will never catch that you used the wrong word altogether. Instead of a mispelling, you may have the correct spelling for the wrong word. Learn from your editor or proof reader. Study the suggestions they provide, use the correct word and try to remember what you have learned. Thanks Sharon.
  3. Happy Birthday, Riley!
  4. Happy Birfday, Wacee! Hey, it's your birthday and I get a present...just realized I have gone over 3,000 posts. Yay! Can't think of a better place for that to happen.
  5. Happy Birthday, Jack!

  9. To All My Democratic/Liberal Friends: Please accept with no obligation, explicit or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2012, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee. To My Republican/Non-PC/Independent Thinking Friends: MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR! Now, let the record show that I don't believe I have many Democratic/Liberal Friends.
  10. The disposable or consumable amenities (shampoo, soap, coffee, etc.) are expected to be consumed. I have no qualms about taking them (though I never take the coffee because I have better taste than hotel's budget allows them). Anything that is permanent or that can be cleaned and reused is off limits. Taking them would be considered theft.
  11. Does Cammy know this?
  12. You're thinking something more personal?
  13. I find your response very interesting, Yang. I doubt any southern university, including University of Texas, is particularly supportive of gays. Indeed, a friend who is a recent graduate of UofTX tells me of a very horrifying experience he had there which clearly indicates a lack of support or even an attempt to support gays by senior officials. Things may have changed since his graduation. Southern universities, other than those with religious affiliations, usually have gay student organizations, but I doubt many of them have made much headway in their efforts at acceptance. Your fraternity seems unusually liberal, although the atmosphere you describe strikes me as something akin to Don't Ask, Don't Tell. In any event, I wish you well. Oh, I suggest you give Tim Tebow a wide berth.
  14. Happy Birthday, John!
  15. The minimum age for AARP membership is 50. That hardly seems old enough from my current viewpoint .
  16. Her age or yours, Andy?
  17. He is a good flutist; that is obvious from the first few bars. The rhythm he added is a neat trick and certainly takes some talent. Unfortunately, it detracts from the smooth, melodious sound of the flute. I would rather him hire a drummer to accompany him.
  18. See article.
  19. The Grand Jury Report may be instructive. I read only a few pages of the report. It is disturbing and you may not want to read any of it. Paterno is mentioned a number of times beginning on page 7.
  20. Happy Halloween! Here's an e-card I got from my honey: http://ak.imgag.com/imgag/product/preview/flash/bws8Shell.swf?ihost=http://ak.imgag.com/imgag&brandldrPath=/product/full/el/&cardNum=/product/full/ap/3125133/graphic1
  21. Those are wise words from someone so young, Billy. I admire your attitude and your outlook on life. I will be praying for you.
  22. “Inscriptions;” “Life’s Best Invention” The CEO of Apple computer, Steve Jobs, died this past week of cancer at 56 years of age. After he learned of his cancer he spoke at the 2005 Stanford Commencement ceremony. He told his young audience; “Death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it, and that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. Its life’s change agent, it clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you- but someday, not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.” Jobs was echoing the words of Solomon who said, “Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come” (Ec. 12:1). The “evil days” Solomon explained were the days of old age and death when “the dust will return to the earth as it was and the spirit unto God who gave it” (Ec. 12: 7). Death is truly life’s best invention. For a time, when we are young, we think we will live forever. A few moments later we are wearing hearing aids and walking with a cane. So enjoy every moment, chase your dreams, and serve God. Life’s best invention is not far away. -Dennis Doughty
