Tamatea was an explorer who traveled over this land and the Ōtamatea river. He explored Hokianga and Kaipara harbors and sailed east coast where his boat wrecked and transformed into Tākitimu mountain range. Today Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu is one of the major tourist spots in New Zealand, more because of its name than for other reasons.
