  1. Welcome Taylor. Glad to see you here. It's a remarkably civil and sane place here.
  2. It was a really good chapter to write, too. No, I think Eustace is kind of a mind my own business kind of fellow, learned over a long period of time. Maybe finally Eric won't feel like every thing he does is being weighed carefully. Or maybe that is still a long way off. Fear is a very hard thing to unlearn, I think. Thank you for your patience and persistence - and especially for your review.
  3. Mr. Whitley probably has other notions about Eric than we do. no spoilers, but that's coming. Besides, we've seen Eric's journey, and Mr. Whitley hasn't, so his lenses on this will necessarily be different. But I thank you for bringing up the point that it's likely Mr. Whitley finds something a little unexpected in his new hired hand. Thanks so much for your perceptive reviews!

    Work

Mr. Whitley could be a good avuncular figure for Eric. If nothing else, there's something to eat. Now if he can manage to fly under Mr. Whitney's radar for a little while...

    A Short Ride

Eric / Stefan I has got years of conditioning to throw off, plus the terror getting sent back to his Uncle Ray, or jail. Trust will come very slowly, I think. And he's getting good at being invisible.
  6. These are awesome, Tim. I can hear you in the dimness, searching, reaching for the sounds, but they're just echoes. That comes through so clearly and beautifully. As you have so often done, you paint with words with great effect. Thank you.
  7. There's a student and alumni memorial on the campus where I work. Passed by it this morning, and the melancholy of all the stories (I know many of them) spoke to me in there in the pre dawn darkness.
  8. I think I am out of "aww." But I'm in awe. Wonderful chapter, nearly magical, really. How lucky Nate is to have his uncles Kendall and Michael looking out for him - and for Bodie, too. This is a wonderful way to help us see Nate, and the way his uncles will take care of him until he can fly on his own confidently. Thanks for this chapter!
  9. Thank you for your comment, Tim. I appreciate your reading and reacting to how I feel about them, still. It lifts the winter in the heart to remember them as they were.
  10. Student Memorial Seven cold inches lie upon them now; their bricks, their stones, sink down below deep white. Smiling once, under skies so blue all the Earth seemed pale in contrast; innocent, the youthful brows furrowed by the need to learn. Beneath night's newest pale cover, I still see them all, lithe, laughing, there; unaware they're eternally eighteen.

Sorry about the tease. And I think the drunken redhead is pretty nasty, as well as disturbed. Not really in touch with reality - Maddie certainly paid him no attention, so I agree that the relationship between redhead and Maddie was over, or never existed. Eustace and Eric will have plenty of work to do together this summer. But this experience will leave Eric feeling more insular and less willing to be open, I think.

Eric's retreat to the farm is a big step in his growth. Yes, the smash up with redhead was predictable, but precisely because Eric is not at all comfortable in in his own skin with anyone, and can't read the danger signs. Eric's relationship to Eustace was fun to write about. Hope it will be as enjoyable to read...Thanks so much for reviewing!

The redhead might once have had a thing with Maddie - it's not clear (says the author). They certainly appear to have diverging views...Eric will be okay with hanging out at the farm for a while. And alcohol? Yeah, he's definitely learned something there.

    A to Z

What is good is that Eric felt safe going back to the farm. Eric doesn't trust anyone, or confide in anyone except his journal. But he feels safe with Eustace, and that's a huge step.

Yes, it seems that Eric is damned for being straight and damned for being gay. But look beyond that a moment. For the first time, he had someplace he felt safe in retreating to when things went badly. And while Eustace misread the situation, he treated Eric's cuts and kept him on. And Eric isn't going to blame Toby for what happened, even though it's doubtful he'll be able to be open to him. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing this chapter!

July Fourth. Independence Day. That means parades, celebrations, fireworks. It means cookouts and parties and bonfires. My friends noticed that I'd been a freaking hermit since school got out. They hounded me with texts and calls all through the month of June. Didn't I want to go out on a day trip to the beach with everyone? Didn't I want to go to a friend's graduation party? Didn't I want to double date to the movies? No, no, and no. I'd be expected to pair off. To have a girl. To pretend.

Thank you. It was very kind of you to review this. Tim has been pushing me and inspiring me; I'm no poet. This was a very long time coming.

    Chapter 3

Stark, cold realization sets in. Now what? He has to learn to live, no? Wonder haw that will play out....nice chapter, especially from the internet angle. Well done. Hoping for more?

    Interrogation

Asshat? What is that in Swedish? What we've seen of Toby doesn't look that way to Eric. Ambrose is another matter. He's glad that Eustace has some help. And it really is fun to watch Eric begin to explore becoming himself. I'm really grateful for your perceptive comments and reviews. Thank you.
  20. The hurt, the betrayal, the disloyalty are all beautifully painted. Nothing wrong with this. You can deviate from the plan any time you like.

    Chapter 2

Flashback time. And what a rotten time it seems to be for Craig. Poor guy. Things weren't going well before the end of the world...ugh.
  22. You have successfully painted the picture of emptiness and pain that those who are bereft may feel. The church service and funeral were gracefully described. What a way to learn your good friend - now dead - had a crush on you; from the brother. Meditation certainly might help, but David has got to be messed up about this - and it's good to see him beginning to wrestle with it. Not sure what to make of the spirit connection made between Twoey and David. Having something to do for Twoey will be good for David though, as long as Twoey will allow it, and if David doesn't blame Twoey for Danny's death. And as long as the mom is good about it, but right now she seems onside. Excellent chapter. Want more!

    Interrogation

And we got to see a side of Eric that was only partially exposed earlier. He's a little competitive, I think. Eric is clearly nervous about the day to come.

    Chapter 1

I am sniffing around the bait. It looks good. Seems interesting....is there more, perhaps?

    Interrogation

I am glad you liked this chapter. I found it easy to draft, but very hard to hone into the shape I wanted. I suspect Eric's arms and back and hands ache, the walk down to Andersonville was enough exercise for Sunday. Count on caution from Eric - though saying yes to Toby was a huge step for him, you could tell.
