  1. So much in this, it needs another reading. Or two. But the richness of the background and the tragedy of all this killing and blood - I'm attached to these characters, and very sad to see them die. That said, it's a well written and riveting chapter. Thank you. Now to do my self-assigned re-reading....
  2. Don't agree the story is stalled, but like ice growing on a Canadian pond, it gains form and definition in lots of different places - slowly, slowly, around the margins, and then suddenly, it;'s there. I suspect this story is kind of like that. I liked the skating scenes, especially. Very interested in the Daniel - Robbie interactions. Wonder where that's headed. But Robbie is making a mistake with Fran; who's there to tell him so? Poor kid, the answer is 'nobody.' Another interesting developmental chapter. Will keep watching for more. Thank you.
  3. Poor Robbie. Heart being vectored in two directions, plus the girl who wants in. And then, there are other undercurrents that could be even more difficult fro Robbie to navigate. What's an outsider Brit to do? Eh? Great chapter. Please, sir, can we have some more...?

    Interrogation

July 3 - Sunday Sunday, day of rest. I am so glad that Eustace Whitley believes in God, because I am as tired and worn out as an old pair of shoes. Kind of like my old sneakers, in fact. I got to meet Ambrose Whitley and his family this weekend. Ambrose is a stockier, broader version of Eustace, with thinning red hair and bright blue eyes. He grinned at me when he shook my hand Friday evening before I brought the flock up from the lower meadow. “So you signed on as the summer help? Lucky
  5. Well done, David. He had the guts to actually walk over to Twoey's house and ask, which none of his other friends did. The man at the door - Twoey's presumptive father - is possibly better than he appeared at first, but first impressions weren't good here. David certainly has more to stew about. And one wonders whether the father will hang around for much longer, or whether he'll wash his hands of the whole mess if Twoey regains consciousness. Nice to see David eating again, and cooking! Well, now, there's a dream.

    Sentinel

You are most kind to review this. Funny how just one tree can light up a hillside, but a whole landscape full of them looks so very different.

Thanks for the very kind review. Poetry is fun, but slow work for me. Doggerel is different...

    Sentinel

Thank you so much for your kind words. Tim will tell you I was scared to share it. LPW is fun, but this was more serious. Very glad you liked it.

    Sentinel

Thank you, Tim, for your encouragement, your kindness and your thoughts. You inspired this. A sunny hill side begged for a tiny bit of notoriety, and your example kind of made it happen.
  10. One orange tree: autumn's lone surviving blaze of maple, splashed like paint on a sea of brown, A vandal's mark on bleak November's hillside. How long until all Polaris' mighty arms sweep away the Sun's last lonely sentinels? It is their doom, and mine, I now contemplate. And I am lost.
  11. Fitful, occasional contributions to a poetry collection.
  12. Remember the film well. Now love your poem, too. It reads and scans beautifully.

    Roger

It is really scary to think what might have happened to Eric if he hadn't gotten away from the truckers - especially Roger in the Green Hat - who wanted to use him and sell him. Tim (see earlier comment) makes a good point, in that kids do this so they can live, and there shouldn't be shame in that. How Eric will feel is another thing, and that may take some time to work itself out.

The interlude with the play in the creek was a fun part to relate, and just came to me in the moment. Eric needed to have some fun besides filling his belly with fruit. And then there is the moment when the fun and games turns a bit serious. But he will certainly remember that afternoon for a long time....

    Rescue

Eric / Stefan did for baby Branlee and her mother what we all hope we might do if the circumstances were ours. Lucky for us we're not in Eric's shoes. There is so much more journey to cover, though.
  16. Yeah, Eric got used badly here. And Colin being a homophobe as well as a jerk hurt - literally - here. This is definitely one of those instances when one can't win for losing. But the reading to Maggie part was one of my favorite bits to write...

    Wrong Help

Whether Ozzie is on the level is a big unanswered question. But it's one of those cases when what a person sees is colored by one's expectations. The AA coordinator doesn't see Eric for who he is.
  18. Thank you for your very perceptive review. Eustace will probably let Eric make the decision, if any. Eustace is pretty laconic, and probably would be an excellent listener, but not a coaxer. Right now, Eric can rely on safety, for the time being.
  19. Well, he certainly learned about the joys of livestock testing on a rainy day. That he'll go through it without complaining says a lot about how much he's already beginning to stick with Eustace. It's hands on work, and I think he likes that. I think he trusts Eustace, if only so far. There are barriers and secrets that will take lots, lots, more to break down.
  20. Positive reinforcement and a little deserved praise will change anyone's life, I think. Eric's life is certainly seems set to change, and it's fun to watch. Also fun to write.

    Work

It's good that Stefan / Eric will finally get a rest from running, even though he got to do some farm work instead. A real meal was a big incentive. Eustace couldn't possibly be seen as threatening, even by a very, very wary Eric. Truth will be along time coming, though. That takes a long time to build.

    A Short Ride

Trooper Lockhart may not really have had enough time to dig. Bet something will bother him about the encounter, though.

    Roger

Eric got more than he bargained for, and I think that contributed to the way he reacted. No, he surely didn't expect or deserve what he got at the hands of the truckers. Maybe he'll see that one day, or have a chance to reflect on it. I'm glad for your take on this, and really appreciate your review, Tim. Thank you so much for responding to Eric and his story. - Parker

And he might just do it, one day, who knows? That's the kind of person Eric appears to be. The play in the creek was pure fun...until he got scared. He's going to remember it though, you're right about that...thanks so much for your review.
  25. The mental picture of Eric in cast offs for the trunk was both poignant and funny as I wrote. Eustace has been at that farm forever, probably has seen a lot in that neighborhood. But he's clearly an older homebody who stays down toe the farm, mostly, especially now that he's become increasingly isolated as his years advance. No, not surprising that Eric doesn't trust Toby. Still, all things considered, Eric is in the best place he's been in for a decade.
