    I like the image you set out for us: the poem as the hard shell, drawn from the experience of living. It’s kind of like the exoskeleton of a lobster, perhaps.

    That’s a great question. As you say, Gunnar is dead, but his past behavior indicates that the man had a mean and impulsive streak. He never wanted Stefan, and resents his presence in the world. In his sober moments, Gunnar possibly hoped to keep his son in servitude, or even try packing Stefan out to Uncle Ray in exchange for some of that extortion money he’d had to save up. Conveniently, Ray would probably make Stefan disappear and Gunnar could plausibly deny any precise knowledge of the boy’s whereabouts. As you suggested, it appears that Stefan was living on borrowed time back in Carlsberg. Thanks a ton for bringing up an interesting plot bunny.

    I am a confirmed flower sniffer. Today, the sweet locust trees were in bloom, and the bees had to compete with me, at least for a while. It makes me glad to know you enjoyed these.

    Somehow, I missed this - I’m terribly sorry. Although the Stevensons are taking Andy in temporarily)according to the statute), it also seems that in several ways, he’s come home to them. He doesn’t understand how to be in a family, but he feels for the first time what it’s like to be on the inside of that warm circle. Thanks so very much for your comment.
