  1. The skyscrapers seem to juxtapose well with the 8-10 ballads. It’s tempting just to write in those forms only, yet other possibilities beckoned. You’re really kind to discern the watchfulness and transition in these. Most of all, I’m grateful you read them.

    Communications

I do so enjoy reading about Eric. I could surely use his advice about my garden. The prospect of an interview in which Tyler apologizes for vandalizing his property must unsettle Eric considerably. I know it would make me nervous. I look forward to watching Eric choose a wedding present for Adam and Andy!
  3. Oh, man. Northman should put in for a transfer before his blood pressure skyrockets. He should never have tangled with CJ. This chapter developed CJ’s professional and political contacts very nicely. I’ll be looking for connections to this chapter down the road.
  4. April 1 Late March glooms with penitential snow, neither unseasonal nor unknown, as if the earth could cover itself in sackcloth and shiver in its contemplation of trusting its future to mankind. Stray snowflakes wander without purpose separate from the central flurry, and float across the field on the wind’s unseen breath with no inclination to hasten their desultory descent to my tongue.
  5. An offering of poems for National Poetry Writing Month; April 2022. Some were composed in response to prompts provided to me, others not.

    A Forest of Light

I really like how you connect the feelings of dawn, the anticipation of light, the sensations of the forest, and the promise of light and warmth. This is lovely.
  7. Poor Peter. He got off on the wrong foot with CJ, and I fear the name calling will never end. God help the poor senator or bureaucrat who does the same one day in the not wholly distant future. It was nice to see Chipper and Oz give CJ doses of his own medicine; I wonder if it takes two of them to get to CJ. And getting tickets for Northman? Now that would be more than an olive branch. It would be more like the whole tree.
  8. This took my breath away, I was laughing so much. Oh, my.

    Forty

This is an excellent birthday poem. That you are alive is as important a fact of the universe as any galaxy. I liked this very much.

    Chapter 1

I liked your skyscraper very much, especially the kisses with sprinkles!

    A Reaction

I enjoyed reading this; it tells a story in a nice, tight form.
  12. This is a hard read, and it reminds us of the hard truth that it’s necessary for us to be watchful, whether we want to be or not.
  13. I walked home beneath untroubled stars where trees slept silent, with no reply to the hoarse voices of reawakening frogs, their untuned love songs unrequited by my unmasked whistling in the dark.

    CDMX • XXV

If Northman is being nice, either CJ entered an alternate reality or something very unusual is afoot. Sure the resident CIA agent might spread rumors and misinformation, but Northman being nice would confirm to any watchful observer that CJ’s trip was momentous. It’s not just Northman that should have CJ and Oz twitching; it’s Simmone blatantly pumping and probing for information. Great chapter.
  16. What a very sad, very heartbreaking story Loe related. That Jay can be what Loe needs in that moment says more than any words or gifts or Stratego.
  17. It does, oui.
  18. I’m so glad you have enjoyed these. Thank you very much for reading, and for your encouragement.

    Expert

I can feel the dark colors emanating from this poem; your annoyance is palpable. I can only say that I sometimes feel this way too.
  20. Your poems speak to me and make me hear your voice telling me about the quiet, and that solid, reassuring peace - and about how focusing on perceived flaws can shatter that peace into shards. These lines are spare and beautiful.

    Reset

What an interesting challenge you set for yourself. You can take pleasure in your success!
  22. It’s nice to see much of the chapter devoted to Nic being able to relax into himself, and to enjoying his friendship with someone. His having to hole up, locked in his room with Joey, is a big fat flashing red light. Blind spot or not, Nic’s mom absolutely has to know. So:next chapter is a storm? Can’t wait for the wind to howl.
  23. This was a lovely Washington interlude. It was nice seeing everyone, if only briefly. So much going on, and there seems to be a continuing theme that Owen and CJ will have to be in different places at different important times in the months to come. That doesn't seem like a happy set of circumstances. I will withhold judgement on Carson's girlfriend. I will need more evidence. Like Owen, I can see that the need to affirm climate change as real seems like an important litmus test. Oh. Just ratted myself out as a tree hugger. Thanks again for a great chapter!

    Shamrock

I like this poem. It’s not entirely in a major key, but it’s relative minor passages enhance and enrich it. Thanks you very much for sharing this with us.
  25. You put it very well; perhaps it’s as if our view is slowly fading. You’re right that Pavane should feel like a treasured memory, never to be forgotten. Thank you very much for reading this collection, and for your most kind comments.
