Over the past couple of days, I've noticed when I login, I don't appear at the start of the 'Who's online' list. Being nosy, I always look to see who's also here. Just now, I refreshed the page a couple of times over the space of two or three minutes and the order / representation of names didn't change. Is that an issue my end, or is there a problem with this part of the site? Chrome on an Android tablet and Windows laptop.

@Carlos Hazday It's more the presence of trigger words. I usually have no trouble. I was blocked from working on a blog post once for the same reason. -

I thought the chapters worked well although I appreciate it makes more of a job for you. It meant I got two lots of comments on a very different piece, although readership did drop off significantly after the first chapter. Again, subject matter may have played its part. I sincerely hope I won't need to take advantage of this option this time around.

My father was a pipe smoker. And yes, cleaning, tamping down and all the other little tasks were as much part of the ritual as the actual smoking. In later years, he was banished to the study for a smoke. Thank you for this memory.

My preferred ambience is silence - in sense of the room I'm writing in. I don't see the point of having music on if all you're going to do is block it out. Music is there to be listened to in its own right.

I hear you. I don't get SAD as such but the excessively gloomy, wet autumn and early winter really got me and everyone else down. Having to resort to multivitamins for vitamin D. Roll on the spring.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate all the thoughts and views expressed, especially about this story. Often they also make me think. As an anthology story, it is complete. A lot of my writing comes under the 'slice of life' category. Will I visit them again? Never say 'never'.

Not the Apple - yes, there's gardening in there, but I also read it as don't shelter behind Original Sin - take responsibility yourself. Overwintering - many living beings struggle to survive in the winter. Us included when there's no home to be had. The Last of Them was the best to my mind. As ever, dear friend, you direct us away from pursuing material things Give and receive love instead. Yes, indeed. -

The pencil sharpener grumbled as it sat on the side table. “How long's He gonna stare out the window? We're here to be employed, not left lying around.” Nearby, the eraser shrugged. Sharpener could be rather abrasive at times. They both knew who were the essential members of the team. They watched the current pencil being fondled and caressed by their owner. Eraser hoped there wouldn't be any chewing; or sucking – that was gross. Not that he was bothered otherwise. Pencils came and went.

This made me go back and look again. 'Mature' covers everything from a prevalence of swearing in an otherwise innocuous story through to full-on sex and violence. It is very broad. If it is a question of restricting access, I would be keen to see another category added like a film rating of '15' as well as '18'.

@Myr Your words have power... No sooner did I read this than I got round to buying a subscription. Can't promise it'll continue, but on the basis that something is better than nothing, I went ahead. I happened upon a writers' site the other day which said it started in 2005 or thereabouts. Yep, I believed it as the site looked as though it hadn't changed at all over the intervening 15 years. This is what GA might have been but for the valiant work by Myr and the other admins. Thank you.

Usually I'm happy enough to silently tag along with whatever anyone else thinks. This time nobody's sticking their head above the parapet. I can cheerfully say I have no idea who this is. Enlighten me, someone!

Why should it have to be so? Creativity often means pushing yourself to try a new means of telling a story. Yes, you might lose a few readers (temporarily, I hope), but equally, you may gain new ones. Personally, I dislike the expectation that my next story should in some way mirror what I've produced before. You can tell I'm not usually a reader, can't you? And yes, I understand the nervousness that comes with posting a new story.
