Most parents don't carry life insurance on their children, since they don't anticipate they will die young. Possibly the insurance company of the other driver, if there wasn't any doubt who was to blame, although I'm not sure how that works in a no-fault state. As far as the case of the return address on the cards, it will be explained in greater detail as the story progresses. In fact, it will explain a lot of the things that people have asked about so far, but I know that sometimes it's difficult to wait so you can find out these things. Let me try to address some of your points. As far as them easily slipping back into their former bff mode, I agree. That happened with me and my best friend from high school after we hadn't seen each other for years and I'd graduated from college. Somethings never change. As far as your comment about Mac's callousness in talking about the death of his siblings in front of his parents, I disagree. I'm sure they've had many discussions about it since those things happened, so this wasn't unusual for them. They've finally accepted that what happened was a tragic part of life. As far as the remaining questions, you're just getting ahead of me. Mac didn't want to talk to Devin about those things until they got out to the cabin, and they'll discuss all of those things in due time. As far as their majors, how many freshman know exactly what they intend to do until after they get to orientation and then to college, where they are forced to make a decision. Any how many of those decisions are changed later? You're going to find that many, if not all of those questions will be answered soon. Everything is being slowly revealed, including the truth.

You all seem to have made up your minds about Devin's family, but are you correct? There is definitely a reason Devin's family chose the quiet life, but may be not the reason you suspect. CSU will be an entirely new adventure, so keep reading.
