    I'd never heard of this word before, but I've since learned it evolved from the Anglo-Norman word amercier, which in turn came from the Old French a merci, which translated to 'at the merci of'. In other words, at the mercy of the court or your judge. If I had heard this word used before, I probably would have thought the person was saying immerse, but was using the word incorrectly.

    This is a term you'd most likely hear in a grocery story, especially at the deli and meat counter as they're weighing out product. They have to make allowance for the containers or wrapping paper they're using during the weighing process.

    Hmmm, I didn't think harangue was merely used to describe a public speech or a lecture. I always thought it had to be done in hostile or aggressive manner. Eg, The drunk was haranguing passengers on the subway, or The professor was haranguing the students about how poorly they'd done on the exam.

    True, he's growing us mentally and increasing our vocabulary, but I can't see using it in one of my stories or in conversation.

    You can tell this word comes from the German just looking at it, but its not something I expect to hear in daily conversation or see in casual print.

    I would have guess this word meant in a mild manner, not flattering manner, such as a person trying to find something to say without hurting the other person's feelings. Oh, well. I guess I was thinking of the other half of the Latin root.

    When I see this word, the first thing that pops into my mind is the term "ladies auxiliary", because the women usually have a support group for men's fraternal organizations, and in the past occupations that were mainly male, such as the fire or police auxiliary. I'm not sure if they still have those, since women now serve in both the fire and police departments.

    Peace is something the world should strive for, but unfortunately there are always some people that think they can gain more through war and hostility or make themselves feel more human by attacking others. May this season bring peace and tranquility to all, especially my friends here at Gay Authors.

    No, I didn't wake up, start my computer, and hop on GA. I haven't gone to bed yet. My body clock doesn't coincide with standard time.

    Not to be confused with roll tide, which is a common phrase you hear down here in the south, especially in Alabama.
