  2. Reading Mercedes Lackey's Collegium chronicles has prompted me to start on a re-read of her 'Magic' trilogy.
  3. Oops! Sorry Graeme - I didn't think of this in political terms.
  4. Wonderful news for marriage equality in Australia with an emphatic 'yes' result for the Australia wide plebiscite. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-11-15/same-sex-marriage-australia-says-yes-to-ssm/9150344 http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-11-15/live-blog-same-sex-marriage-survey-results-ssm/9134066
  5. HAVE A GREAT DAY!!
  6. There was no TV in our little country town and I remember vividly when the first film was shown in the Town Hall. (The Wizard of Oz - and I had nightmares about flying monkeys for ages) One of the first full novels I remember reading when I was about 7 or 8 years old was Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea. I think my sense of wonder at speculative ideas was strongly stimulated by the Myths and Legends sections in our set of the Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopedia. In my early teens there was huge public interest in the space race and I remember the awe I felt at the sight of the man made dot of light traversing the sky when Russia put Sputnik into orbit.
  7. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

  10. Oh My! I read those ten rules and wonder whether they are designed especially to provoke commentary rather than as serious guidelines. When I look through, the only rule that makes any sense to me is the one about infodumps. My understanding of an infodump is a great amount of explanatory information being thrown at the reader in one big lump. As Myr says, the information has to be imparted somehow, and there are techniques for doing that without overloading the reader. I also agree - it's the author's skill in presentation that's important, not the rules.
