A Short about a bad day for a kid named Cliff

As part of the creative writing course I am taking, a recent assignment was to write a chapter to go at the start of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men - written in the style of Steinbeck. I have decided to share it with you all.

Jim and his partner Michael live in a socially-oppressed town where being gay is a sheer moral death sentence. At the dawn of the computer era, and in an age where work seems to find him little money or pleasure whatsoever, Jim decides to venture into the world of computer sciences, all the while supporting a man who seems all the more removed from society as time goes along.

We’ll return to „Syllables & Sounds”, that small book- and record store in the Main Street of a small rural town on the lake’s shore in North Vermont. Does history repeat itself, does it only seem to re-appear in small variations or are revolutions to be expected?

Keith has a rusty vintage motorcycle, the best uncles anyone could ask for, and a slight infatuation with a man who uses puns shamelessly and can bench press twice what Keith weighs. And now he needs a welding specialist.

Or: The one where Shiro is an out-and-proud welder and Keith is really into the terrible puns he makes.

In a world where the wealthy have all of the power, how do they make sure they are able to keep it and prevent everyone else from revolting against them? Don't worry! The business leaders have a plan to do just that.
