The Great Mirror of Same-Sex Love - Poetry - 70. ...an unexhausted stream...

.

Keen are the pangs

Of hapless love and passion unapproved;

But where consenting wishes meet, and vows,

Reciprocally breathed, confirm the tie,

Joy rolls on joy, an unexhausted stream,

And virtue crowns the sacred scene with peace.

Tobias Smollett,[i]

Smollett is best known today as the author of the Satyricon-like novel The Adventures of Roderick Random (London 1748). This book makes a surprise mention in Frederick Loring's novella Two College Friends (Boston 1870), which is featured in the prose section of the Great Mirror of Same-Sex Love.

The Adventures of Roderick Random contains at least one very memorable Gay couple. Smollett even has the audacity to see to it they have a happy ending in the novel, which may explain why men-loving men have kept the pages of the novel alive all these years :)
