The Great Mirror of Same-Sex Love - Poetry - 102. . . . Oh, if you would, if you could . . .

.

Northern Sky

I never felt magic crazy as this.

I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea.

I never held emotion in the palm of my hand,

Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree.

But now you’re here.

Brighten my northern sky.

I’ve been a long time that I’m waiting;

I've been a long time that I’m blown.

I’ve been a long time that I’ve wandered

Through the people I have known.

Oh, if you would, and you could,

Straighten my new mind’s eye.

Would you love me for my money;

Would you love me for my head;

Would you love me through the winter;

Would you love me till I’m dead?

Oh, if you would, and you could,

Come blow your horn on high.

I never felt magic crazy as this.

I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea.

I never held emotion in the palm of my hand,

Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree,

But now you’re here.

Brighten my northern sky.

Not all poetry makes good song lyrics; not all songs become good poetry. This is one of those lovely instances in which the poetry and the music dance together as coequal partners. Thank you for posting this.

Thank you, Parker. If you listen to Nick's music in general, he seemed to eschew classic "hook" key changes, perhaps thinking them too commercial (or worse, too American!). But in this song, he proves just how powerful he can make a pair of upward-moving key changes, climaxing with the radiant "Would you love me for my money," etc.

Then he returns to the original key to recap the opening stanza. Pure artistry here; one can feel how unexpectedly liberating this man's sudden appearance in Drake's life made him feel (forever!). That's also due to the power of poetry ;)
