The Case of the Short, Short Prince 1. Magick

   (14 reviews)

Jamie Grimmstone is a young apprentice mage in the shop of the Master Thorvil, and longs to be a master himself. Together with his best friend (and boyfriend) Garvin Kinsmith, they keep the Master’s shop in order, assist the Master on his many missions, and study to one day become more than they are.

Life seems orderly, if slow, and Jamie has resigned himself to years of study before he can be a true mage himself…until one day, quite unexpectedly, an opportunity arises that the boys can hardly pass up, and they are off on a task that quickly turns into an adventure...

This story may be @Geron Kees best work yet! As has been said by others here it tells of science and fantasy with a cast of characters that is amazingly wonderful with a few lothesum creetons thrown in to make an amazing adventure with twists and turns right up to the very end! Geron has out done himself by creating a world(s) and situations that glue you to the words and make setting the story aside, for a break or rest, almost impossible. This story MUST be read to understand and admire the exceptional gift this author has for painting amazing scenes, with words, that make it seem that you are a part of the cast and actions happening around you. Great Work Geron and keep the stories headed our way.

Jamie Grimstone is Master Thorvil's apprentice mage. While the master is away Jamie decides to impersonate him when a summons is received to attend the Palace and then asked to solve a problem for Prince Sedwick who has found himself with a size predicament due to a spell cast on him by an evil mage. Jamie, accompanied by his boyfriend, Garvin Kinsmith, undertakes the task of getting the spell reversed.

Along the way he is joined by various helpers and all are faced with many dangers. It also becomes clear as their journey progresses, that more is at stake then just a few inches of Maypole!

Prepare to be amazed by the skill of the author when you join Jamie on his journey as he confronts magical and terrifying creatures.

Response from the author:

Aw! Thank you! :)

A truly wonderful adventure full of bold characters and well written escapades.  Had someone recommend this to me when the story was about fifteen chapters into it.  I quickly caught up and waited impatiently each day for a new posting.

The story is reminiscent of a few others; but has a truly unique take on an old idea.  The characters were so interesting and fully fleshed out; even the secondary characters that we did not see much were oh so interesting.  Loved Wanda.

Don't start this unless you have time to finish it as you will not be able to stop reading until you have consumed it all.

Bravo, truly Bravo.

Response from the author:

And a very nice review, too. Thank you! :)

If you're a fan of this author you know he does two types of stories  the conventional gay teen relationship story and the story that has aliens, magic, adventure, danger, suspense etc. with a gay teen relationship in the background. It's the latter category where this one is from and this just may be his finest. that is saying a lot when if you're a fan you know how great his previous stories are. If you are not familiar with his previous work you won't need to know any of that to enjoy this story. Just give yourself plenty of time to read the chapters for they are on the long side but you'll love because not a word is wasted

Response from the author:

Thanks for the wonderful review! :)

This story was an amazing adventure into a world of magic.  Medieval meets modern science with a interesting insight to a possible origin of magic

The writing is top notch, character developments are among the best I’ve read here and the dialog unique and fun to read. Snave, my personal favorite, is an unusual and a lovable character even though he’s not of human form.

While not particularly erotic, the adventure of these characters and their pursuit for justice had me captivated.

I loved to watch the main character, Jamie, grow into the Master Mage that he’s become.

If you’re into the supernatural with a gay theme this is a story for you!

Response from the author:

Thank you for letting me know that you enjoyed the journey. I enjoyed your comments along the way. 🙂

An adventure is only ever as good as the participants, and this one had a lot of them, readers that stopped what they were doing for a time each day in their worlds to go along with Jamie and his friends in this one. That made it larger, and brighter, and more fun! I really can't think of a better magick than that!

The Case of the Short Short Prince is a delightful blend of the magical, the normal and the extraordinary. It tells of a band of unlikely people, who deny the odds, and save the world as they know it from unimaginable horrors.

This story has everything- romance, adventure, comedy, drama. Perhaps one of the most engaging tales on the GA website, it is a story not to be missed.

Response from the author:

Thank you for the very kind review. There will hopefully be another adventure sometime next year!

Geron Kees is a master writer without a doubt, and this is another confirmation. Twisty plot, sweet characters, well thought-out setting with a huge potential for development into something close to Booneverse of the same author. Actually I already see an option of crossover, and a huge one.

Jamie Grimmstone absolutely must meet Charlie Boone.

Response from the author:

Thank you for the kind review. A crossover is unlikely, but let's not rule out any sort of thing! :)

Of all the excellent novels by Geron Kees, this one is at the top of my list.  I know I will be reading it again.  Geron has created many interesting and unusual characters that come alive in your imagination as you read.  I always enjoy Geron's style of writing that is filled with excitement, humor and great twists in the plot.  The very wonderful word pictures of the multiple settings create a very unique and awesome world filled with fun and danger.  Jamie, Garvin and Snave set out to help the prince of their realm with a small problem.  As they seek the solution to his problem, they discover a situation that threatens their world. This is a must read!

Response from the author:

Thank you for your warm and positive review! :)

This story grabs your attention from the beginning and keeps you begging for more at the end of each chapter. There are truly amazing characters who are each unique and fascinating. The plot is inspired with depth and diversity taking you  through a universe that is unique and full  of interesting possibilities. There are twists, turns and surprises  throughout this story. I love these characters and hope that we  will get  to see them again. I give a wholehearted thumbs up review of this story. Bravo to the author!

Another excellent story, and a brand new universe to explore!

A great blend of fantasy and science fiction, driven by a diverse cast of lovable (and a few not so lovable) characters, both human & other.

A truly fun and satisfying read.

Response from the author:

Thank you. I'm happy you enjoyed this one! :)

This is one of Geron's best stories yet.  A new version of magic, called magick; new ways to use it that I have not previously seen combined; a new (or at least new to me) way of beginning a quest for something; new characters; a new and different world and universe, and fascinating stories in individual chapters or continuing through various chapters.

I have been a fan of Geron's for years, but this might be the best yet. It is excellent, excelling, exciting, energetic, invigorating, interesting, innovative, and fantastic -- all at the same time.   I heartily recommend this story.

Response from the author:

You make even me want to read it! :)

Thank you, again!

Let us consider, if we could, the workings of a writer of fiction.  It helps to have a story!  That writer must have a starting place and an ending place - and all the little fun things in the middle.  Then there are characters...I am not a writer and I could write pages and pages of bland facts about what characters may be doing , where they may be going or who they may be interacting with.  And if I wrote those pages, I would bore the readers on this forum to revulsion.  Oh...and let us not forget that in fiction writing, the author may pick out the World in which he sets the story, the characters and the events!

This is my second reading of "The Case of the Short, Short Prince" by one of my favorite authors, Mr. Geron Kees.  "Short, Short Prince" is a story of magic - Mr. Kees prefers 'magick'.  But this is not the cushioned, easy, soft magic of that kid we watched grow up at Hogwarts - No Sir!  This magic not only has power and produces results - and consequences - but is driven by a desire of Mr. Kees very powerful characters.  Oh, yeah - if you have laughed and shared joy with Charlie Boone and Kippy Lawson - you are going to dream about and write fan letters to Jamie Grimmstone and Garvin Kinsmith!  And those two mentions don't even include their absolutely charismatic traveling companions!  The bad guys are entertaining, also.  We can't help but despise them until Mr. Kees turns some key in a lock, changes our attitude and suddenly, maybe we had a wrong impression on the bad guy!  How does he do that?

Then...there is the World!  Mr. Kees works as a professional - he and I have traded some very light correspondence - and I have to ask...where does he find the time to let his mind roam and dream up and note all of the amazing, extraordinary details that find their way into the World, the setting and the details of the place, details of beings, details of animal life, details of foliage, that he has crafted into "Short, Short Prince"?  I read in a Stephen King book once where he sometimes went  to sleep and just "let the men in the basement do the work"!  Perhaps that is where Mr. Kees fleshes out the myriad details that he wrote into this masterpiece.

Then, have you ever tried to learn chemical matrices?  Particle Physics?  Engineering Load Stresses?  These things can put to sleep even an interested student like a WWF sleeper hold!  But - in "Short, Short Prince", our amazing author manages to describe the workings of magick - using electrums, magickons and incredibility!

I have read much of what Geron Kees has written, and I would have say that this is at the top or close to the top in great quality reading of his entire portfolio.  This is a great read, full of excitement, great characters, a delightful new world setting and a new perspective on 'magick'!

Thank you, Geron Kees, for all the work you have put in to produce not only this one, but a list of short stories, the terrific Charlie Boone saga - and others.  You have labored many hours.  I and many others appreciate it.
